The Beatles and Rolling Stones: Back to the Future

By editorial board on November 4, 2023

Rolling Stones top UK charts with new album 'Hackney Diamonds as The Beatles drop of “final” song ‘Now And Then’.

Everything would be fine if we were in the 60s. But the clock dramatically marks November 2023. It's like being on a time machine, or in the film 'Back to the Future'. You go to a record store and read 'Rolling Stones Tops in the Charts with new LP',   immediately next to it you read: 'The Beatles release a new single.' (Very strange) Let's investigate.

The veterans who lead us throughout our youth and beyond with their music, have decided at the venerable age of 80 to excite us again.
If we had any doubt that Mick Jagger had made a deal with the devil, now we almost have proof.

Different for Paul and Ringo, who lived inside a Yellow Submarine near Pepperland for years.

In the meantime, 18 years after the last record,  The Rolling Stone's new album Hackney Diamonds has claimed the number one spot in this week's UK charts - drawing level with The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen and Robbie Williams for the record for most number one studio albums.

It is the group's 11th album to hit the top spot and its first collection of new material in 18 years. The band  owns first act with top 10a lbums in each decade since the 1960s.

The band, which is currently comprised of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood after Charlie Watts died in 2021, scored their first top 10 album on the Billboard 200 chart in 1964. In total, The Stones claimed 13 top 10 albums in the ’60s, 12 in the ‘70s, six in the ‘80s, three in the ‘90s, two in the 2000s, one in the 2010s and now one in the 2020s. And they will receive the BRIT Billion Award as the new album goes to number one in the UK.

So to maintain the historical rivalry between the two bands,  the surviving Beatles  decided to drop  a new single and a corto-movie  with the help of AI.  Paul McCartney introduced the film ahead of its airing.

“Hello I’d like to introduce you to a short film which tells the story of how me, John, George and Ringo came together to record our last song. It’s a single called ‘Now And Then’. We hope you enjoy it,” he said.

But a historical event changed history: Paul McCartney played on the Stones' album first time ever.

Times before Apple Records  announced the   release of the Beatles‘ mono catalog reissued on vinyl. This came as welcome news to a relatively small, but passionate subsection of the Fab Four’s enduring fanbase that have been waiting for the 14 mono LPs since the group’s catalog was remastered in 2009. But seriously, what’s all the fuss about mono?beatles_monomasters rolling-stones_mono-box-set copy

Well, a mono recording has all of the sound mixed in a single channel and wasbeatlesmono160614w intended to be listened to on a sound system with one speaker — such as a turntable with a built-in speaker. Until the late ’60s, most rock and pop albums were mixed for mono, since most young people didn’t have access to stereo systems.

Stereo recordings use two, or sometimes more, independent audio channels to create the impression of sound heard from various directions. In stereo, vocals and guitars may be mixed in the right speaker while the rest of the instruments are mixed in the left. “When the early Beatles albums were recorded in 1963 through 1967, mono was by far the dominant format in the UK. Beatles producer George Martin recorded these albums with mono in mind from the start,” Bruce Spizer, a noted Beatles expert who has written eight books on the band, told Radio.com. “The stereo mixes were an afterthought, with the Beatles rarely present for the stereo mixing sessions. For these reasons, the early mono albums represent the Beatles music as the Beatles and George Martin intended it be heard.”

Rolling Stones to shot out a 15 CD box, or sixteen with the works of the band of Jagger and Richards recorded between 1964 and 1969, have a simple and clear subtitle in mono. The Rolling Stones in Mono will collect the group's U.K. and U.S. releases from 1964's The Rolling Stones through 1969's Let It Bleed alongside a collection of singles and EP tracks dubbed Stray Cats. In total, the set will contain 186 songs, 56 of which have never been made available in mono since the digitalization of music.
