Morrison developed an alcohol dependency. He died at the age of 27 in Paris, allegedly of a heroin overdose. No autopsy was performed, and the exact cause of Morrison's death is still disputed. Nel 2008 Morrison è stato posizionato al 47º posto nella lista dei 100 migliori cantanti secondo Rolling Stone e, l'anno successivo, al 22º posto nella classifica dei "50 più Grandi Cantanti del Rock" stilata dalla rivista britannica Classic Rock.
