Rare Beatles single with incorrect Paul McCartney’s surname to fetch £9,000

A rare version of The Beatles‘ ‘Love Me Do’ is expected to fetch over £9,000 at an auction today (June 24).

The 1962 single, which also features ‘P.S I Love You’, is one of only 250 copies and is unique due to the fact that Paul McCartney‘s surname is incorrectly spelt as “McArtney”.

It was part of a select number of tracks pressed and distributed to TV and radio stations prior to the single’s release on October 5 in 1962.

“This is an especially rare Beatles single from the very earliest days of the band’s career,” vinyl specialist Rob Smee, told BBC News.

“Being one of only 250 it is of particular interest to Beatles’ collectors and the misspelling of Paul McCartney’s name is both authentic and interesting in itself.”

The seven-inch vinyl will go under the hammer at Stacey’s A uctioneers’ sale in Chelmsford, Essex, later today.

Othe odd Beatles Vinyl  like The White Album marked 0000001 went on auction in N.J.  The limited edition “first print” albums were made only for The Beatles and Capitol Records executives exclusively, and all of the other known albums have been taken out of their seal. Ringo Starr himself auctioned off an unsealed “first print” copy (Number 0000005) in 2015 and fetched $790,000. This album — which has a starting bid of just $25,000 — comes from a well known Beatles collector and has been privately appraised for $1 million.

Ringo Starr's copy of The Beatles' self-titled 1968 album has been confirmed to be the most expensive vinyl record ever sold.
The first numbered copy of the LP was rumoured to be John Lennon's who, according to Paul McCartney, "shouted the loudest" for it when the band decided to have the copies numbered.

The first four pressings of the album were all in possession of The Beatles, while copy No. 0000005 sold at an auction in 2008 for a little less than $30,000 (£20,000).

The record itself has a history as remarkable as it is. The Factory Sealed No. 0000001 White Album came from a high ranking Capitol Records executive who obtained it at the album release party. Within a week, he took the album cover back to Capitol Records to have it factory sealed. By doing so, they created perhaps the most valuable Beatles record of all-time!

The first-ever pressed copy of the record was sold at auction  for $790,000 (£522,438). Previous reports suggested that it had sold for $910,000 (£600,000), but Guinness World Records have now corrected this.
