Elton John has said that he will no longer use Twitter after a change in its policy that he says will allow “misinformation to flourish unchecked”.
The 75-year-old musician’s comments come after Elon Musk, who bought the social media outlet for $44bn (£35.9bn), said he was granting “general amnesty” for suspended accounts, which experts have said would lead to “superspreaders of hate” returning to the platform.
John tweeted: “All my life I’ve tried to use music to bring people together. Yet it saddens me to see how misinformation is now being used to divide our world.
“I’ve decided to no longer use Twitter, given their recent change in policy which will allow misinformation to flourish unchecked.”

Elton John isn’t touring anymore, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t traveling around performing: He did a private gig for 900 people on December 19 at the iconic opera house in Venice, Italy.
On the 20th anniversary of a performance he did at Le Gran Teatro La Fenice to commemorate its reconstruction after a 1996 fire, Elton returned to the famous stage for the solo gig, organized by yacht company Ferretti Group. You can see footage of it on Ferretti Group’s Instagram.
The concert was a benefit for Save Venice, which works to preserve the city’s artistic heritage. Elton reportedly owns an apartment in Venice.
According to Italy 24 News, Elton played for about 90 minutes, performing hits like “Your Song,” “Rocket Man” and “Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word.”
Celebrity chef Massimo Bottura, 61, told the ‘Dish’ podcast: “This Christmas, the 19th of December, I have to cook Christmas lunch in Venice, in Venice theatre, ’cause it’s gonna be a big Elton John concert.
“You know, it, is a really, his dream was like cooking, uh, playing a La Fenice, you know, like... after the restoration.
“It’s going to be a big party and you know – they’re ask me to cook like a Christmas, like with tortellini, zampone, lenticchie, everything.
“So he’s gonna be there.”
Recently the ‘Rocketman’ singer, 76, is resting up after recently retiring following his epic ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road’ tour, but is apparently treating himself to the feast later this month while he plays a gig in Venice.
Elton John has revealed his 15 favourite songs released this year in a new post shared on his official social media channels. Publishing the list on Instagram, Elton doffs his cap to the likes of boygenius, David Kushner, Stormzy, RAYE, Tom Odell and many more.
