And when you’re onscreen alongside Rick Springfield, you’d better have a decent teacher to whip you into shape.
So, Streep got Neil Young. Earlier this month, Streep spoke on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon about her guitar lesson with Young, which essentially boiled down to “crank it up to 11.”
And now we’ve got video footage of the pair’s meeting. Streep wasn’t exaggerating: You can see Young roll all the knobs on the amp up and start making some very Neil Young-esque noise. The real fun of the video is watching Streep react – she seems absolutely blown away by the sounds Young is conjuring up and engages in some Wayne’s World-style worshipping.
The gorgeous collection of tracks, titled End of the Day, saw Barnett taking a more minimalistic approach to music-making, putting lyrics and wit on the back burner to allow the movie to shine.
Similarly, film composition might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Neil Young. The name might have you humming the opening strums to ‘Harvest Moon’ or longing to delve back into the discography of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, but your first thought probably isn’t the soundtrack to Jim Jarmusch’s 1995 gem Dead Man.
Still, like Barnett, Young ventured into the world of film scoring, creating a selection of improvised instrumentals for the western. Perhaps fittingly, the collection of songs would inspire Barnett in her own work, as she recalled during a conversation with The Line of Best Fit.
