Listen to Elvis Costello unreleased before cover of 'Waylon Jennings

Elvis Costello Cover Waylon Jennings. The cover, performed at London’s Royal Albert Hall in 1987, had been unreleased before now.

6-CD King of America & Other Realms, out Nov. 1, collects demos, outtakes, and unheard concerts, plus three more discs continuing Costello's journey through American music

Recorded live at London’s Royal Albert Hall during a six-night sold-out run in 1987, the track appears on an upcoming six-disc, 97-track box set of Costello’s music, King Of America & Other Realms. Produced by Costello and Steve Berkowitz, the compilation arrives as in vinyl, CD, and digital formats in November.

Elvis Costello’s King of America, the 1986 album that found the singer-songwriter exploring American music genres, will be the focus of a massive reissue that collects unreleased demos, outtakes, a concert recording, and more from the era, plus decades-later collaborations with the album’s co-producer T-Bone Burnett, Rolling Stone reports.

The super deluxe edition of King of America & Other Realms, out November 1, features the newly remastered 1986 LP — including its centerpiece, a rendition of the Animals’ “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” — plus a second disc called Le Roi Sans Sabots that includes solo demos, outtakes, first drafts and more from the album sessions, much of it culled from two recently unearthed demo reels.

“If you are familiar with the songs of King Of America and then listen to the collection of sketches and solo performances on ‘Le Roi Sans Sabots’ you may see a different picture,” Costello writes in his 35-page essay included in the reissue.

Compiled by Elvis Costello, the six-disc Super Deluxe Edition box set, King Of America & Other Realms, releasing November 1 via UMe, traces Costello’s musical travels from Hollywood, Calif. – where the King Of
America album was recorded – to a brand-new take on that album’s opener, “Brilliant Mistake,” recorded in Cape Fear, N.C. in early 2024, via Costello’s recording adventures in New Orleans, Oxford and Clarksdale,
Miss., Nashville and Memphis, Tenn. This one-of-a-kind 97-track musical journey is guided by Costello in a newly self-penned 35-page essay beautifully illustrated with numerous rare and never-before-seen photos
in a 57-page booklet. The discs are housed in a handsome 12” x 11.5”package. A startlingly beautiful cover shot by Terence Donovan reveals the majesty and absurdity of a king in his velvet and bejeweled crown
and embroidered denim jacket.

The reissue, available to preorder now in a variety of formats, also includes Costello’s entire (and previously unreleased) Royal Albert Hall concert from January 27, 1987, featuring covers of songs by Ray Charles, Waylon Jennings, Buddy Holly and more American music icons.

Those discs also contain additional recordings between Costello and Burnett — notably tracks from the 2010 album National Ransom — plus three newly recorded tracks, including radical takes on the King of America songs “Indoor Fireworks” and “Brilliant Mistake.”
