Paul McCartney has revealed his hearing is going — though his chart-topping ability is undiminished. The Beatles legend is “well chuffed” that his new album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, has hit the No1 spot. ( The Sun reports)
However Sir Paul, who turns 84 next week, says his ears are failing him — and he sometimes mishears his wife Nancy Shevell, 66.
He said: “My hearing can be dodgy. It’s pretty good but sometimes, you know, what happens is you miss little bits of words so it can get weird.
“I was talking to Nancy one time and it turns out she was talking about food or something but I misheard it and I said, ‘What’s Sid Bernstein got to do with it?’
“Anyway, she wasn’t talking about Sid Bernstein.”
He told comedian Rob Brydon at a promotional event in North London: “You know, when we were kids, you just look at a lot of old people and, in truth, you think they’re a bit thick. You do really.
“What happens is also, actually, as your hearing goes, you realise now that older people just couldn’t hear the question.
“When I wrote When I’m 64, I was thinking, ‘64? Oh, my God, that’s so old.’ And then I go, oh, I’m 64. Oh, now I’m 74 and now I’m going to be 84.”
Macca credits his vegetarian diet and Pilates for his overall good health.
He said: “These days, I do a bit of exercise. You know, whereas at school, I hated physical education. Now I go to the gym, do a bit of Pilates. It’s good.”
Macca has now clocked up 24 UK No1 albums.
He said of his latest: “Yeah, we are well chuffed.
“If you do something, you want people to like it, and if people like it enough to send it to number one, you know they like it.”
