The Who frontman Roger Daltrey has shared an update on his long-gestating biopic about late drummer Keith Moon, revealing that he recently finished work on a script, has a new lead actor in mind, and is determined to finally get the film produced. NME reports

The film has been in the works since at least 2005 – when Mike Myers was signed on to star as Moon – however it’s since languished in development hell. In a new interview with Vulture, Daltrey assured fans that won’t be the case for too much longer: “I just finished a script, and I’m hoping to do my biopic of Keith within the next couple of years,” he said.

The legendary singer expounded on his ambitions for the project: “I’m very pleased with the script. I want people to get an understanding of him and his life, and the complete genius he was. He had so much talent, that boy, but he became out of control for a lot of reasons. Mostly for lack of discipline. But once the drugs kick in, usually that disappears, doesn’t it?”

Which actor for the role?

As for the actor Daltrey hopes will play Moon in the film, he stopped short of revealing their identity, but described them as “a role model”. He added: “He might be too old, but then again, Keith looked 50 when he died. He was 32, but he looked 54. I think the actor is about 40 now. I don’t want to jinx it and say his name. But there’s an actor who I’ve seen and when I look at him I go, ‘God, it’s Moon.’

Actor Jason Schwartzman you can probably see him playing Keith Moon , he has acted in various films , TV shows and he also plays the drums.  He is 42 years old but as Roger says Keith was lookin older than his age, so he fits perfectly. (Obviously we can be wrong, but given the photos, it seems to us that the character is perfect for the role; and thanks to some tips from the production entourage, we think we hit the nail on the head, otherwise, we'll see).

Born June 26, 1980) is an American actor and musician, Wikipedia report.

Schwartzman made his film debut in Wes Anderson's 1998 film Rushmore, and has gone on to appear in six other Anderson films: The Darjeeling Limited (2007), Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009), Moonrise Kingdom (2012).Jason Schwartzman | Discography | Discogs

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), Isle of Dogs (2018), and The French Dispatch (2021). His other film roles include Spun (2003), I Heart Huckabees (2004), Marie Antoinette (2006), and Klaus (2019). Schwartzman starred in the television series Bored to Death (2009–11) and appeared in the fourth season of the FX anthology series Fargo (2020). He was an executive producer on the Amazon Prime show Mozart in the Jungle (2014–18), a series he also acted in.

Schwartzman has released three albums through his solo project Coconut Records, having previously been drummer in the rock band Phantom Planet.

“It’s all to do with the eyes. The eyes are all important. You virtually wouldn’t need to say any dialogue because you could read it in his eyes. I mean, that’s a bit much, but you know what I mean. You can read so much in the face of Keith. He had such an incredible vibrancy.”10 Famous Actors Who Are Notoriously Difficult To Work With – Page 19

Daltrey went on to say that Mike Myers “would’ve made a fabulous Keith” when he was onboard to star in the film, opining that “it’s a shame it never happened”. But he’s not willing to let the film slip through his fingers again, as he said in closing, “I’m driven by this project. It came to me in a dream 30 years ago.”

A month before his tragic death, Keith Moon gave an interview that presented a very different side to the normally ebullient drummer, his roguish charm all but gone. This video captures Moon’s final television interview – a highly-publicised appearance on Good Morning America with host David Hartman, on August 7, 1978.

Pete Townshend joined a new interview he revealed that the record company found an unreleased track called ‘Ambition’ featuring him, Keith Moon, and John Entwistle.
The guitarist also sounds off on the absurdity of NFTs, the future of classic rock, the Spotify controversy, why he loves Freaks and Geeks, and more. Rolling Stone phoned up Pete Townshend at his new home in the English countryside.

In typical Townshend fashion, the guitarist gave long, thoughtful answers to every one of our questions, often taking fascinating detours along the way and divulging minute behind-the-scenes details of the live music industry that few other artists discuss in public. He also name-checked Wes Anderson, Dave Davies, Rod Stewart, Luke McCallin, Christopher Plummer, and many others. Every talk with Townshend is a wild ride.

Roger Daltrey insists Keith Moon biopic will be antithesis of 'Bohemian Rhapsody'

Shooting was set to begin on the Moon pic in June 2022, and the casting process has been rumbling along for a few months already. Producers on the movie are Sinclair, Oliver Veysey and Jeanne Elfant Festa, along with The Who’s long-time manager Bill Curbishley.

The Who singer Roger Daltrey has taken a swipe at Bohemian Rhapsody insisting that a planned biopic on his former band-mate Keith Moon will be the antithesis of the Best Picture winner.- according to Rebecca Lewis - Metro

‘You wouldn’t want a film about me, there isn’t a rating low enough. You wouldn’t want that,’ he joked about the band’s hedonistic lifestyle. ‘I will do the Keith Moon film and that will have a low rating to, that will be the antithesis of Bohemian Rhapsody. And I haven’t seen Rocketman but I saw Bohemian Rhapsody and I thought Rami Malek deserved what he got. ‘He did a great job with a really thin script.

“I’ve got to find a Keith Moon,” the star told BBC 6Music’s Matt Everitt recently. “It’s going to be very, very dependent on the actor and the actor’s eyes. Because you’ve got to cast it completely from the eyes because Moon had extraordinary eyes.”
“They didn’t really know Keith,” he added. “I don’t know whether anybody outside the band really got to know him like we did. He was a strange bunch of people.”

Before writing himself the script, Daltrey continued on about the project saying he has rejected several different scripts over the past while, including one where actor Mike Myers would play the part of Moon's character.

"Every time I've left a writer to it before now, they say, 'OK, I see what you mean, I know what you want', and then they go off on a complete tangent from what we've agreed because they don't know what it feels like to be in a band," he said.

The script needed to be written by someone who was there with the band.
