Paddington joined the monarch in the recorded sketch before pop band Queen opened the musical performances.
Ten minutes before the concert started, Prince Charles walked the short distance from Buckingham Palace to the Royal Box, waving cheerfully at the crowd as they shouted "Charles! Sir! Sir!" and zoomed in their camera phones.
All attention was fixed on the Royal Box until Paddington appeared on the big screen for his tea date with the Queen, prompting squeals of delight around me in the crowd. "Oh, it's Paddington," exclaimed one woman a minute into the film. "I thought it was a corgi."
Diana Ross, Sir Rod Stewart and Duran Duran were among the other big names.
The Queen did not watch the Platinum Party at the Palace in person, however, while the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were also not in the royal box.
LONDON — Queen Elizabeth II may have to miss a star-studded London concert in her honor Saturday, but she brought the house down when she appeared in a surprise video recorded with another British national treasure: Paddington Bear.
Queen and Adam Lambert kicked off the open-air show outside the palace, with performers including Alicia Keys, Duran Duran, Rod Stewart and opera singer Andrea Bocelli set to follow. Diana Ross will close the show with her first U.K. live performance in 15 years.
Brian said at the time with a cheeky giggle: “I don’t think I’m allowed to say…I suppose I can say that it has been discussed. So you may see us there…Of course, it would have to be something quite big following the appearance on the Buckingham Palace roof many years ago. I think people would expect something quite special, wouldn’t they? Hmmm…so that’s probably all we can say at the moment.”
Now the news is confirmed, with Queen and Adam Lambert set to open the BBC’s Platinum Party at the Palace concert.

The legendary band is celebrating 50 years in showbusiness by releasing 50 videos, a new one every week, commemorating an iconic moment from their glittering career. The series is nearing its end and the 47th video is simply titled 'Brian on the roof." Of course, every Queen fan will immediately know this is referring to the unforgettable guitar solo he performed for the monarch's Golden Jubilee. When Queen Elizabeth celebrated 50 years on the throne in 2002, the Palace immediately planned to have Queen performing God Save The Queen.
The band's 1975 album A Night At The Opera ended with a guitar-fuelled rendition of the national anthem. The recorded version soon began to be used as the closing music for their concerts – but it was never performed live.
"They said originally will you come and play a version of God Save The Queen, strolling through the state rooms of Buckingham Palace and in the style of Jimmy Hendrix?’
"Now there’s a few things I didn’t feel comfortable with - I mean, trying to be Jimmy Hendrix is one of them!"
The star knew the royal plans would not work and that he needed to do something else and quickly had a completely new plan – he just needed to convince the Palace.
Brian May made also recently a record in support of women: “This recording was conceived as a response to a calling to promote this great cause for women’s health. But it evolved into a magnificently raunchy and defiant rock track in its own right.
“These four ladies all rock out sensationally, and it was pure joy to underpin their performances with my guitar.”
May, 73, plays a pink guitar in the accompanying music video, a nod to Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Woman said they were partially inspired to cover the track to pay tribute to another West End star, the late actress Rebekah Gibbs.
The former Casualty star died at the age of 41 in 2014 after being diagnosed with cancer.
Group founder Mazz Murray, who was a close friend of Gibbs, said: “We are thinking particularly of our dear friend and fellow performer Rebekah, who we lost, but not before she brought about a change in the rules of diagnosis and specialist referrals through which she has saved so many lives.”
