The three-part show is a deep dive into the 1980 assassination of the former Beatles member. It is narrated by Hollywood legend Kiefer Sutherland and directed by Nick Holt and Rob Coldstream. The programme is set to arrive on the streaming platform on December 6th
Titled “John Lennon: Murder Without a Trial,” the docuseries features “exclusive eyewitness interviews and previously unseen crime scene photos, shedding new light on the life and murder of music and cultural icon John Lennon and the investigation and conviction of Mark David Chapman, his confessed killer,” according to Variety.
“Murder Without a Trial” is being touted as the “most thoroughly researched examination” of Lennon’s 1980 murder, as it was granted extensive access to the New York City Police Department, the Board of Parole and the District Attorney’s Office through Freedom of Information Act requests.
In addition to exclusive interviews with those closest to Lennon at the time of his murder, the series also takes a close look at the motivations of his killer through conversations with Chapman’s defense lawyers, psychiatrists, prosecutors and detectives.
Directed by Nick Holt (“The Murder Trial,” “Responsible Child”) and Rob Coldstream (“Jade: The Reality Star Who Changed Britain”), “Murder Without a Trial” was produced for Apple TV+ by 72 Films. Coldstream executive produces alongside David Glover and Mark Raphael, and Simon Bunney and Louis Lee Ray serve as producers.
News of the Lennon doc comes with the announcement of what is being billed as the last Beatles song, “Now and Then,” which will release on Nov. 2. The song includes contributions from all four members — Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr — but was only recently completed.
