Andy Summers: Eric Clapton 'Begged' to Buy my '59 Les Paul, 'It's Now Worth £2 Million'

"I didn't feel great about it, but he just really wanted it. So, we agreed on a price." The Police guitarist says.

Andy Summers recalled how Eric Clapton "begged" The Police guitarist to sell him his 1959 Les Paul, arguing that the iconic ax now costs about £2 million.

At the time Summers was making a name for himself as an exceptional session player in the London scene, Eric Clapton was "helping American blues surface in the UK" and was "very purist about it", the Police legend tells Rick Beato in a recent interview.

To make matters even more interesting, both guitar icons ended up playing Les Paul Sunbursts, after Clapton saw the instrument Summers was playing and wanted to get one for himself according to Ultimate Guitar.

"I liked it more than the Les Paul for some reason. I don’t know, pickup set up, whatever. And he knew I had that as well. I put it under the bed. It was in a case, under the bed.'

"But, he kept calling me. 'I don't want to sell it. I don't want to sell it.' But I felt a little bit weird about it because it seemed like the back pickup didn't work. Because none of us knew shit about electronics. A guy could have just fixed it; one tweak and it was fine."

"I kept resisting it. But finally, he called me so many times that I actually agreed to sell it with some, you know, forgiving. I didn't feel great about it, but he just really wanted it. So, we agreed on a price."

"I charged him 200 pounds for it. It's worth about two million now.

This is a rare video (below) of Clapton using a Gibson – he mainly uses Strats on tour. Here he even turns up the gain a bit for some fuzzed-out noodling. "It became part of my body – it was just part of my existence," he says of the Les Paul, which he played in the Sixties.
