On January 5, 1973, the Boss released his first album, "Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J."

Bruce Springsteen’s epic flop: Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. 51 years on, his debut album stands as the most explicit depiction of his true artistry—he’s penned bigger hits, and pushed towards higher octane exultancy, but this humble debut sees sincerity unmatched.

Big anniversary for Bruce Springsteen and for Asbury Park. The Boss’ debut album,  turns 51 years old on Thursday, Jan. 5.

“Greetings” was a musical departure for Springsteen in 1973, and a bright spot for the city. A glimmer of hope for the resort town in the midst of a decades-long economic downtown.

David Bowie once said: “Always remember that the reason you initially started working was that there was something inside yourself that you felt that if you could manifest it in some way, you would understand more about yourself and how you coexist with the rest of society.”

The first studio album from Bruce Springsteen. Although it featured musicians Bruce regularly played with and who would later become members of the E Street Band (Clarence Clemons, David Sancious and Garry Tallent), this was considered a solo outing. “Blinded By The Light” would later become a #1 hit for Manfred Mann’s Earth Band.

In the record Springsteen eulogise Dylan’s exacting encapsulation of society, adding: “The world he described was all on view, in my little town, and spread out over the television that beamed into our isolated homes, but it went uncommented on and silently tolerated. He inspired me and gave me hope.” It would seem that Springsteen wanted to do just that with his record too. (Faroutmagazine)

Bruce Springsteen, Steve Van Zandt and more recount their Jersey Shore roots in a documentary, Asbury Park: Riot, Redemption, Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Directed by Tom Jones, Asbury Park examines the history of the seaside resort and how an unemployment crisis led to riots that decimated the town’s predominately black westside, including its fabled jazz and blues scene. The film will then trace the aftermath and the rise of Springsteen and the Jersey sound, with a particular focus on the famed venue, the Upstage, which became a hub for musicians from all over Asbury Park.(Rolling Stone)

This major theatrical event will also include a bonus feature of never before seen footage, as Van Zandt, Southside Johnny, Springsteen and the Upstage All-stars play a now legendary concert to a sold out Paramount Theater and trade guitar licks with the future of music in Asbury, a group of 11-year-old rockers who prove the best days for the town may just lie ahead.
