The honour, an acronym which stands for “Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony”, is unofficially bestowed upon entertainers who have managed to win the biggest awards in the four fields.
John earned the title with a win at the 2024 Emmys in the early hours of Tuesday (16 January), for his Disney+ concert programme Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium.
The special, which chronicled John’s final US performance at the end of his farewell tour, had been nominated in the Outstanding Variety Special (live) category.
It was the first Emmy nomination John had ever received, and he beat out competitors including the Oscars, the Tony Awards, The Apple Music Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show starring Rihanna and Chris Rock: Selective Outrage.

Streaming numbers for the Elton John classic “Rocket Man” are as high as a kite. On January 5, John took to social media to announce that the 1972 song has amassed 1 billion streams on Spotify, and continues to gain listens.
Elton John announced he and Bernie Taupin had just completed a new album for release next year.He promised that it would be bigger and better than anything we could imagine.
John took to Instagram to share a video showcasing the song’s history and its evergrowing number of streams. He also shared a short caption that showed his excitement about the milestone. “‘Rocket Man’ has hit 1 billion streams on Spotify,” he wrote. “Thank you to all of you who keep listening and streaming. It brings me so much joy that this song continues to mean so much to you all after all of these years.”
Elton John and Brandi Carlile apparently have recorded a new album together, according to an interview with
Elton’s longtime friend, the Who’s Pete Townshend, that was published by Clashmusic. Last week Pete Townshend told Variety that “Elton is so fraught with loss at not knowing what to do next. He’s just gone over to L.A. to make an album with Brandi Carlile. They made an album together in two weeks. He says it’s one of the best things they’ve ever done.”
