But many will disagree with this ranking drawn up by this magazine.

This was revealed by a ranking of 200 artists published by the music magazine and which also sees Whitney Houston, Sam Cooke, Billie Holiday, Mariah Carey, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Beyonce, Otis Reeding and Al Green among the top ten places.

The ranking was compiled by the editorial staff of Rolling Stone and takes into account 100 years of pop music. However, according to what TMZ points out, the list snubs Celine Dion, despite the Canadian artist having sold hundreds of millions of records worldwide and in her career, among others, she has won five Grammys (the Oscars of music), six American Music Awards, seven Billboard Awards.

Among the selection criteria, the Rolling Stone said that it is a ranking of the greatest singers, not the greatest voices. "The talent is impressive, the genius is transcendent," reads the magazine's website. "These are the vocalists that have shaped history and defined our lives — from smooth operators to raw shouters, from gospel to punk, from Sinatra to Selena to SZA."

Outside of Franklin, the magazine ranks Iggy Pop, a Detroit-born vocalist, No. 176, saying he "would have been one of the most attention-getting vocalists ever, thanks to his ready-for-anything, scenery-eating yowl."

The third Detroiter the magazine named was Bob Seger, at No. 181. Patti Smith, ranked No. 117 Anita Baker was ranked No. 92.

No. 87 is Diana Ross, who was born and raised in Detroit and was one of Motown's biggest acts. Rolling Stone described Ross' voice as a "creamy timbre and flirty insouciance," which created "a unique vocal style."

Michael Jackson, who was ranked No. 86, N°. 50 is Joni Mitchell, Marvin Gaye came in at N°. 20.

26 Paul McCartney:  "Is a genius at so many things — songwriting, production, playing all the instruments but especially bass — that it’s no small claim that he may be a better singer than he is anything else. John Lennon’s scream was for the ages, but Paul’s was almost equally intense and even more virtuosic. "

One more surprise cames from Bob Dylan who appeares at No 17. Bob certainly a master and a genius, it cannot be said that he has a beautiful voice. definitely unique, charming but not beautiful.

14 Freddie Mercury
Freddie Mercury’s soul-stirring vibrato and four-octave vocal range — as well as his overwhelming charisma — ignited the music of Queen, making their art rock an arresting spectacle.

12 John Lennon
John Lennon’s voice was like his mind — agile, bright as a bell, startlingly alive. From his screamed-out version of Barrett Strong’s “Money (That’s What I Want)” with the Beatles out-rocking the Motown original to the seething motormouth of “Instant Karma. (SIC)

11, Little Richard 9, Otis Redding, 8 Beyoncé, 7 Stevie Wonder,

6 Ray Charles “People call me a jazz singer and a blues singer, but I don’t really know the difference,” Ray Charles told an interviewer in 1963. “I just try to sing a song, and I only sing songs I like to sing. And I try to put a little bit of soul into everything.” He meant everything.

Mariah Carey, 4 Billie Holiday, 3 Sam Cooke, 2 Whitney Houston , 1 Aretha Franklin.
