In a new interview, Oscar-winning actress recalled some of the final conversations she had with the entertainer before his death in 2016.
If you didn’t know, Susan and David first started seeing each other after starring together in the 1983 vampire movie The Hunger. The couple quietly dated for several years. Susan then went on to marry now ex-husband actor Tim Robbins in 1988 while David married supermodel Iman in 1992.
Susan said that she was able to reconnect with David shortly before he passed away from liver cancer in January 2016, during which time they were able to find closure.
“I was fortunate enough to be closer to him right before he died, the last couple of months. He did find me again,” Susan shared. “We talked to each other and said some things that needed to be said.”
Susan added, “I love his wife Iman, someone who was so equal in stature to him. That was clearly who he was destined to be with. And I’ve kept in touch with her.”
The last time I saw him was at the premiere of his musical Lazarus.’ That was in New York in early December 2015, a month before Bowie’s death from liver cancer.
‘After the show I went to Lesbos.’ Susan has been a campaigner all her life, and was using her profile to highlight the refugee crisis on the Greek island. ‘That was the toughest thing I’ve ever done: a never-ending stream of desperation with no recourse and no way to fix it. The camps were horrific. I wasn’t sleeping and I knew that I had to get up early to start meeting the boats as they came in, so I took some Ambien, a pretty strong sleep aid. And I had this dream that David had called me and that we’d had this conversation and as I hung up I thought [in the dream]: “Nobody’s going to believe me, that David Bowie called me in Lesbos.”’
Susan said she was able to see David in person one last time in December 2015 and now considers herself “so fortunate to be able to see him when he told me what was going on with him.”
However, Susan admitted her final phone conversation with David was a bit of a blur.
Susan recalled being on the Greek island of Lesbos to highlight the refugee crisis and had taken the sleep medication Ambien, causing her brain to become a bit fuzzy.
“I wasn’t sleeping so I took a pretty strong sleep aid. And I had this dream that David had called me and that we’d had this conversation,” Susan said. “Then later I thought, Did he actually call me? And I went to my phone and he had. But I have no recollection of what that conversation was.”
Shortly after that, David passed away. (Sources: YOU - and JJ--) others Sunday times
