Producer Ken Caillat: 'Stevie Nicks furious forced to sing Second Hand News'

Former Fleetwood Mac producer Ken Caillat said that Stevie Nicks used to “storm out” of recording sessions because of Lindsey Buckingham’s lyrics of 'Second Hand News'

He opened up about making the song “Second Hand News,” written by singer and guitarist Lindsey Buckingham. Caillat told MusicRadar that the track originally had a different name.

“We called it ‘Strummer,’” he said. “Before Lindsey had the structure and the words, he would strum his guitar very very hard to these chords. I always thought he’d turn it all into a song.”

The track includes the lyrics, “I know there’s nothin’ to say / Someone has taken my place,” and “One thing I think you should know / I ain’t gonna miss you when you go.” /"Won't you lay me down in the tall grass
And let me do my stuff."

The song was inspired by Buckingham’s bitter breakup with his bandmate, Stevie Nicks. At the same time, their fellow bandmates, John and Christine McVie, were also going through a rough patch in their marriage, which ended in divorce.

Stevie Nicks said: “We were all trying to break up and when you break up with someone you don’t want to see him,” she said (via SongFacts). “You especially don’t want to eat breakfast with him the next morning, see him all day and all night, and all day the day after…”

Caillat said that Nicks used to “storm out” of recording sessions when her ex started singing about her. “Stevie hated when Lindsey got even a little literal,” he shared. “The minute Lindsey would start singing his lyrics, Stevie stormed out and the session would end.

Nicks and Buckingham’s romance didn’t last, but their careers as rock stars did. The two musicians continued to work, tour, and perform together after their breakup.

We were two kids out of Menlo-Atherton High School,” she later said in a television interview. “I loved him for all the right reasons. We did have a great relationship at first. I loved taking care of him and the house.”

Many of Fleetwood Mac’s most famous songs are about Nicks and Buckingham’s bitter breakup. Nicks wrote “Silver Springs,” while Buckingham penned “Go Your Own Way.”

One song that didn’t make the album’s final cut is ‘Silver Springs’, which was replaced on the record’s final cut by ‘I Don’t Want To Know’, much to the frustration of Nicks.

On the track, she tries to seek revenge upon Buckingham to haunt her former beau. In ‘Silver Springs’, Nicks sings: “I know I could’ve loved you, but you would not let me, I’ll follow you down ’til the sound of my voice will haunt you”.
