With a voice that landed on Mars long before the Rover, he was indeed comparable to his opera heroes like Luciano Pavarotti, but he was equally capable of the solemn and softer balladeer style of Dusty Springfield.

When celebrating the life of Freddie Mercury and the music he loved most, his old bandmates in Queen compiled a list of his favourite songs.

These are the anthems they fondly remember him humming in the studio, rattling through in rehearsals or overplaying to death on the tour bus. It’s certainly a list that makes for interesting reading, and albeit the collection is wildly hodgepodge there is definitely something about each of them that just seems to have a bit of Freddie Mercury in it. Following the moving and hugely successful Tribute Concert in 1992, Brian May, Roger Taylor and Jim Beach set up The Mercury Phoenix Trust (MPT) in memory of the iconic Freddie Mercury who died from HIV/AIDS in 1991. The Trust is a core part of rock band Queen and Freddie’s legacy, with the passion and power behind the music forming the bedrock of the MPT

His extraordinary life lived to the fullest and ended tragically, already told in 2018 in the film Bohemian Rhapsody which became the most viewed biopic ever and won Rami Malek an Oscar for best actor for the way he brought the transformation from Faroukh Bulsara into Freddie Mercury and his unstoppable rise to rock glory, now becomes a comic book. It is called Freddie Mercury: Lover of Life, Singer of Songs and tells in detail the years of his comfortable childhood in Zanzibar in Tanzania, the education in India in the colonial elite colleges, the trauma of his family's flight to England in 1964 after the independence of Tanzania, the encounter with rock'n'roll and the London art scene.

"Each chapter is a glimpse into the many aspects of its complex existence," the publishing house Z2 Comics, which produced the book, writes in a press release. The screenplay for Lover of Live Singer of Songs was written by Tres Dean and is inspired by the biography of Freddie Mercury by Greg Brooks and Simon Lupton released in 2019, the illustrators are Kyla Smith, Robin Richardson, Safiya Zerrougui, Tammy Wang and Amy Liu and on the cover of the 136-page volume due out in November 2021 there is a painting by David Mack depicting Freddie in the place where his transformation was always successful, the stage
