The Groton Police Department is currently investigating. However, foul play is not suspected, and a preliminary investigation indicates that he died of natural causes. John Warren Geils Jr., the guitarist and founder of the eponymous J. Geils Band, has died, police in Groton, Massachusetts, said. Police came to Geils' home for a well-being check, police Chief Donald Palma said. The 71-year-old was found unresponsive and was declared dead at the scene.
John, known professionally as J. Geils, was guitarist in his namesake band.they were best known for hits Centerfold, Freeze Frame and Love Stinks.
in the 80s, the likes of US, the Eagles and Billy Joel all opened for the band, who eventually broke up in 1985.
While studying mechanical engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Geils formed the band with Danny Klein, Magic Dick Salwitz, Stephen Jo Bladd and Peter Wolf.
The 12th album ‘Freeze Frame’ was the big one, going to no 1 in the USA and to date becoming the band’s biggest seller.
‘Freeze Frame’ contained ‘Centrefold’ as well as another hit song in the title track.
At the time of publication, the cause of death is unknown.
