Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Ian Paice, Steve Morse, and Don Airey were invited by Bob Ezrin to Nashville to write and record, during which the band were inspired to push their creative boundaries. Letting go of any artistic limitations, they adopted the motto “Deep Purple is putting the Deep back in Purple”. Whoosh! embodies that freedom, with lyrics that reflect their sentiments on the current situation of the world.
“We’ve included everything that made the whole band smile, including Bob Ezrin,” exclaims Morse. “We’ve always enjoyed making music and having the incredible luxury of a loyal audience.”
Two years ago, according with planetrock.com 55 years on from the band’s formation, this March the Deep Purple singer joined forces with his original band mates Gordon Fairminer (lead guitar); Tony Tacon (rhyth guitar); Tony Whitfield (bass guitar) and Keith Roach (drums) to record the self-titled ‘Ian Gillan & The Javelins’.
Paying tribute to music legends such as Chuck Berry, The Drifters, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Charles, Buddy Holly and Bo Diddley, the 16-track album was recorded at the Chameleon Studios in Hamburg over just five days.
Featuring Ian’s Deep Purple bandmate Don Airey as special guest on piano, Ian Gillan & The Javelins took a back to basics approach, shunning new technology and only allowing ‘instruments, microphones, lyrics sheets and memories’ in the studio.
The ‘Ian Gillan & The Javelins’ track-listing follows below
Lately Ian Gillan revealed in a new interview that he and original guitarist Ritchie Blackmore have settled their differences but he still believes that a reunion is still not likely.
Gillian says in a video interview published last month on Bild's YouTube Musik channel that he and Blackmore have "made our peace. I think pretty much We're in communication now. We've solved a lot of difficulties that were nothing to do with the direct relationship. Old management problems that were dividing us and things like that. Boring stuff, but important nonetheless within the group. So that's all been solved now. So there are message going back and forth, and I can sense goodwill much more than in the past."
