Extremely Rare Jeff Buckley Live Session Unearthed

In a surprise move ahead of the holidays, KEXP DJ Marco Collins unearthed a nearly 30-minute live set on Thursday (December 23) by acclaimed singer Jeff Buckley—recorded more than 27 years ago.

According to Americansongwriter The set landed on YouTube not long after Collins dropped the music on his show’s set on the KEXP 90.3 FM broadcast in Seattle, Washington.

Prior to his radio show set, Collins posted on Facebook to preview the unveiling, saying, “TODAY at 5:30 pm on KEXP! About 26 years ago (Grace era) I engineered a 3 song acoustic set with Jeff Buckley from a studio here in Seattle before he played a legendary show at the King Kat Theater!

“Those tapes remained in storage for 20+ years and finally I got my shit together (-ish), got them out of storage, had them professionally mastered, and today on KEXP, I’m going to play them for the first time in two decades. The WHOLE SESSION. Soundcheck & Jeff goofing around in between songs, etc! No interview. Just pure brilliance.”

Collins, who American Songwriter talked with recently HERE, is one of two Seattle DJs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He rose to prominence in the ‘90s with the Emerald City radio station, The END 107.7. He is famed for breaking bands like Beck, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam.

The film directed by Orian Williams, former producer of 'Control' on Ian Curtis, is titled 'Everybody Here Wants You' and is approved by the heirs. "He will be faithful to his character," promises his mother Mary Guibert.

Jeff Buckley's story will be told in the biopic Everybody Here Wants You. The singer will be played by Broadway actor and musician Reeve Carney. It is a film authorized by Buckley's heirs who gave access to his music catalog. jeff

"It will be the only transposition of Jeff's life. I promise the fans: he will be faithful to his life and his legacy, ”said the mother of the singer Mary Guibert. "The determination I put into finding the right people, even if it took a long time, is about to bear fruit."

This isn't the first time Jeff Buckley has been portrayed in a movie. In 2012, Penn Badgley (Gossip Girl) had stepped into the role of the singer in the film Greetings From Tim Buckley which chronicles the days in 1991 when Jeff was preparing for a tribute concert to his father Tim. In that case, much of the story was fictional and Jeff Buckley's original music was not used.

 

Former manager Dave Lory said the musician had been “acting erratic” in the two weeks before his death. “Jeff was trying to buy a house that wasn’t for sale, “He was trying to buy a car that wasn’t for sale.

He proposed to Joan [Wasser, Buckley’s girlfriend]. He even applied for a job to be a butterfly keeper at Memphis Zoo – a lot of weird stuff that was uncharacteristic for him. I think it was a yearning to settle down. He wanted a normal life.”

According with NME, Lory, who has written a book about his experience of managing Buckley, also recounted getting the phone call telling him of the star’s accident. “It was 5:58 – I’ll never forget the time – in the morning,” he said.

“I was in Dublin so that meant it must have been almost one AM in New York and midnight in Memphis. I just froze. I thought I was having a dream. I dropped the phone and you don’t know what to do. Thank god there was no internet cos it would have been tweeted off the banks. You just go numb. I was totally numb, no emotion.”
