A Joe Cocker Biopic Is in Development - Bob Dylan: "Joe was the greatest singer of my generation"When asked who was the greatest singer of his generation, Bob Dylan replied dryly: “The greatest singer of my generation? Oh, Joe Cocker!
Producer Lisa Saltzman has acquired the rights to an upcoming biography about Joe Cocker, and has confirmed that a biopic about the beloved British blues-rock singer’s life is currently in development.
Titled Joe Cocker: With a LOT of Help from His Friends, the book is by the rock’n’roll biographer, Mark Bego, and will be the first crack at telling Cocker’s story since his death in 2014, following his rise in the late ‘60s, his internal struggles, and the peace he ultimately found. The book will hit shelves later this month on November 16th, and is available to pre-order now.
The acquisition includes the singer’s music intellectual property assets, including his interest in his sound recordings, compositions, and his name, image and likeness; further terms were not disclosed.
After working as a singer through the early 1960s, Cocker burst into the mainstream in 1969 with his electrifying cover of the Beatles’ “With a Little Help from My Friends,” which topped the British charts and sparked a major U.S. following, thanks in large part to his show-stopping performance at the Woodstock festival (and subsequent film). With his powerful and unmistakable soul-blues voice and explosive stage presence, Cocker’s popularity grew with the “Mad Dogs & Englishmen” tour, live album and film, which featured an all-star band helmed by Leon Russell.
A new book, Tribute: Cocker Power, which invites readers to “Relive the legendary 1970 Joe Cocker Mad Dogs & Englishmen Tour and the 2015 tribute concert at the Lockn’ Festival with Tedeschi Trucks Band, both of which were captured by the lens of tour photographer Linda Wolf,” will be published April 28 by Insight Editions.

The announcement further states, “This visually stunning volume includes contributions from over one hundred musicians and crew members, including Leon Russell,
