Keith Richards: quitting heroin is easier than give up smoking

By editorial board on February 14, 2019

Rolling Stones Keith Richards has said he has "pulled the plug" on heavy drinking and  admits it’s a struggle cutting back on the cigs and claims that, actually, heroin was a much easier vice to quit.

"I pulled the plug on it. I got fed up with it," he said.Richard admitted he still enjoys "a glass of wine occasionally, and a beer". "It was time to quit. Just like all the other stuff," he continued.

Quitting heroin is like hell, but it’s a short hell. Cigarettes are just always there, and you’ve always done it. I just pick ’em up and light ’em up without thinking about it.’

I've managed to cut it down by a substantial amount of cigareettes every day, and I'm still working on it.

'Because I realised I don't need it. I realised it's just a useless habit. But hey, when you're 75, habits are pretty ingrained.'

'Mind you, if I meet you in a bar and you say, 'Do you want a drink?'  I wouldn't turn it down! I'm not a puritan in these matters. It's just that it's not on the daily menu anymore.'

The star said he still doesn't own a mobile phone and says he's 'pretty technically illiterate'.

He said: 'I rely upon my kids or the wife to… just look it up! Google it or something! I don't touch those things. I've never liked phones, you see.

'Maybe that's just because, being so-called famous since I've been 19, the phone is always ringing and it's always somebody that wants something.

'So with the phone, I would only ever phone out. So when they brought in mobile phones, I'm like, Oh no…! At least before I could say, 'I wasn't in!' But now… Everybody who knows me knows I don't have a phone.'

Bandmate Ronnie Wood admits he is ''much more mellow'' after quitting alcohol.

He hasn't missed drinking before the band's shows. and said: ''It's been about a year now. I pulled the plug on it. I got fed up with it.''

When asked if it was an adjustment, he replied: ''You can call it that , yeah. But I don't notice any difference really - except for I don't drink. I wasn't feeling [right]. I've done it. I didn't want that anymore.

The Rolling Stones rocker's fellow bandmate Ronnie Wood - who ditched booze in 2010 after years of substance abuse struggles - admits Keith is ''much more mellow'' since cutting back on his alcohol intake.

He said: ''He's a pleasure to work with. Much more mellow.

''He's open to more ideas, whereas before I'd kind of grit my teeth and go, 'He's gonna give me some s**t for saying this.' Now, he'll say, 'That's cool, man.'

''It just wasn't working anymore, you know. I think the Keith that we used to know and love had this cutoff point where if he had one more, he'd go over the top and he'd be nasty.

Recently Richards decleared   The Stones won't release another album 0

On U.S.Tour? ‘Maybe This Will Be the Last One’. Keith also reveals the status of the band’s first original album since 2005’s ‘A Bigger Bang.

The ‘Satisfaction’ rockers have been working in the recording studio on their first record of original material since 2005’s ‘A Bigger Bang’ but because they have an upcoming stadium tour in the US next year, it’s unlikely the LP will be finished in the near future.

Guitarist Keith Richards told Rolling Stone magazine: ”Mick [Jagger] and I got together for a few days a month or so ago in the studio, just playing around. Apart from that, there might be a session sometime in December, but I’m not crossing my fingers on that.

”It was [a]great [session], man. We knocked out a few songs together with [producer]Don Was. We’re just working things through. We had a great time — got some nice stuff out of it.”
