Keith Richards on modern-day music: It’s a one-way toilet’

By editorial board on November 8, 2023

'Taylor Swift won't be around in 20 years'. After the interview on The Wall Street Journal

Don’t get me going on modern-day music. Push-button drums and everything synthesised.”

“The only way to cut a band is to put the boys in a room and play, and look in each other’s eyeballs,” he says. “Don’t get me going on modern-day music. Push-button drums and everything synthesised. Digital recording is a one-way toilet.”

Keith Richards also touched upon the band’s recent collaboration with Lady Gaga.

When the interviewer said they were “nervous” to hear Lady Gaga was going to be on a Rolling Stones track, Richards replied: “Right, I don’t blame you. I understand what you were thinking. But she’s one of the Stones now.”

He went on to describe Lady Gaga as a “talented piece of work”, adding that it helped to also have Stevie Wonder playing keyboards on the track. “Having both of them in the same room was pretty interesting,” he says.

And now Keith has turned on Taylor Swift, telling the Wall Street Journal he doesn't think the Love Story singer will be around in 20 years time. Asked for his take on the superstar's decade-long success, Richards growls, "Good luck girl. (I) wish her well while it lasts."

Although Richards doesn't want Swift to take it personally, as he thinks most younger acts won't last for generations to come. He added:

"I've just been around too long to be picking the bones out of kids. It wouldn't be fair of me and I've always been an opinionated bastard anyway."

But if we go by the rock n' roll legend's predictions, Tay should have already fallen into obscurity by now.

"Taylor is a pretty girl… [she's just a] flavor of the month."

We'd say more like flavor of the millennials. The question is, will she grow up with her fans or continue to use media beefs to sell records?be

We'll have to wait and see… though we have a feeling somewhere in a London pub, Taylor is penning the lyrics to her new song, Sticks and Stones (May Break My Bones, But Your Words Are Irrelevant).

Different opinion may comes by Mick Jagger who - joined Taylor onstage for a rendition of his band's classic I Can't Get No Satisfaction during the Nashville, Tennessee tour stop of her concert series in 2015. She also hit the stage with the Rolling Stones back in 2013, during one of the band's summer gigs in Chicago, Illinois.
