Cardi B has picked up Billboard’s Woman Of The Year award for 2020, and was presented with the award by Breonna Taylor’s mother.
Cardi has been a strong advocate for justice in the case of Taylor, a 26-year-old who was shot and killed by police officers raiding her Kentucky home with a “no-knock warrant”, on suspicions that her home may have been used to receive drug packages.
Before this story was even published, it was already controversial. No sooner had Billboard announced Cardi B as 2020’s Woman of the Year than the rapper’s haters piled on, demanding to know why an artist who had put out just one new song of her own this past year deserved the honor.
The rapper previously called for more male rappers to speak on the Taylor case.Presenting Cardi with the award, Taylor’s mother Tamika Palmer said: “Cardi has used her platform to spread the truth about what happened to Breonna and to reaffirm that Black women’s lives matter”.
In her acceptance speech, Cardi spoke to “all the girls out there that are just like me” and said that, in order to achieve success, “you got to put your mind to it”.
