Lynyrd Skynyrd postpones shows due to Gary Rossington’s heart surgery

Legendary Southern rock act Lynyrd Skynyrd has postponed two shows due to guitarist Gary Rossington’s heart surgery.

The concert of note to Northern California fans is the performance at Toyota Amphitheatre in Wheatland. The show, which was originally set for Aug. 17, will now take place on Oct. 19. The other concert is the Las Vegas gig at T-Mobile Arena, which is now set for Oct. 18.

Tickets for the original dates will be honored at the rescheduled shows.

“Guitarist and original member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Gary Rossington, has been experiencing fatigue and other symptoms related to a leaky heart valve. Rossington underwent a procedure on July 31 to repair the valve. To allow him proper time to recover the band must reschedule the upcoming tour dates. Rossington is expected to make a full recovery,” according to a news release.

Lynyrd Skynyrd vocalist Johnny Van Zant also commented in the release.

“We all appreciate the well wishes for Gary and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused,” he said. “But he can’t wait to come back and perform at 100% for the fans. We will see you (mercurynews)

“It’s hard to imagine, after all these years, the band that Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins and myself started back in Jacksonville, would resonate for this long and to so many generations of fans. I’m certain they are looking down from above, amazed that the music has touched so many,” said Gary Rossington, original and founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Lead vocalist, Johnny Van Zant added: “We’ve been blessed by these great songs and the messages they carry to the fans. It’s been a true honour to try and fill in my brother’s footsteps for the past 31 years, keeping the music and his spirit alive.”

Formed in Jacksonville, the band behind hits like “Free Bird,” ”Sweet Home Alabama” and “Simple Man,” was struck by tragedy when a plane crash in 1977 killed lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, backup singer Cassie Gaines and several members of the road crew. The lineup now includes Gary Rossington and Johnny Van Zant, Ronnie’s brother.

Tickets for the first leg of the tour go on sale Feb. 2 at or  the official Lynyrd Skynyrd website from 10am local time on February 2.
