New George Harrison Fender Rocky Signature Stratocaster Announced

By editorial board on August 8, 2022

Rocky remains one of George’s most distinctive and beloved guitars.

To honor the Day-Glo icon, Fender has lovingly replicated the 1961 original. In addition to carefully recreating Harrison’s brushstrokes, the George Harrison Rocky Stratocaster features a trio of vintage-style ‘60s Stratocaster pickups for a dynamic, crystalline tone and a Mid-‘60s “C”- shaped maple neck.

In February 2022, Fender markets George Harrison's replica of Telecaster RosewoodThe replica of the Beatles great's custom Tele – used extensively on Let It Be and Abbey Road – has been brought back due to increased demand following Peter Jackson’s Get Back documentary

The custom rosewood Telecaster that Fender built specially for George Harrison in 1968 wasn't in his arsenal for long, but because the Beatle used it extensively on the Fab Four's final records – Let It Be and Abbey Road – it's become one of the electric guitars with which he's most often associated. Guitar World reports

Fender introduced an ultra-limited edition Custom Shop replica of the legendary Tele in 2016, and followed that up with a more accessible Artist Signature version of the guitar in 2017.

Now, after a surge in demand for the instrument in light of Peter Jackson's Beatles documentary, Get Back, Fender has reintroduced the George Harrison Rosewood Telecaster.

At an undisclosed location, Master Builder Paul Waller closely examined Harrison’s unique original instrument to recreate this legendary guitar as accurately as possible. Appearing stock to a casual observer, subtle details set this guitar apart as both a prototype instrument and an exceptional Custom Shop creation. The sleek rosewood neck is fashioned from two pieces of rosewood capped with a rosewood fingerboard, just like Harrison’s original, instead of the traditional one-piece construction. The neck’s visible seam line adds to the character of the instrument, marking it as a unique creation. The nut is 1/8" wider than most vintage Telecasters for a unique advantage while playing; the wider string spacing makes it easier to finger chords that ring out loud and clear, with plenty of crisp articulation. - Price € 2.690,00

In fact, it was the fourth Fender guitar that The Beatles had acquired. During their early years, the group hadn’t owned any Fenders, although George had written to a friend in 1960 that the guitar he “might manage” was a Strat. Instead, he decided to indulge his passion for Gretsch guitars—the brand used by one of his six-string heroes, Chet Atkins—and bought a secondhand Duo Jet, and, later, a couple of Country Gents and a Tennessean.

Nonetheless, the Fender boss came away happy with a deal to supply the band a pile of Fender gear: a Fender VI six-string bass, some Fender Rhodes pianos, a Fender Jazz Bass, a selection of amplifiers, including a PA system, and the guitar that we’re interested in, a Fender Rosewood Telecaster for George. Remarkably, the Final Fantasy theme is also present in the guitar’s sounds, thanks to a “limit break” option for the trio of V-Mod Strat single coils, inspired by the series’ high-power combat moves. In reality, this equates to a push-pull tone pot, which runs the bridge and middle pickups in series for thicker, higher-output tones.

This model features a poplar offset body, designed to be thin in order to reduce the instrument’s overall weight. To this, Fender has paired a maple neck and a 20-fret maple fingerboard.(guitar.com)

Other FF touches include a 12th-fret meteor symbol inlay and numbered neckplate bearing the FFXIV logo, while an additional Fender x FFXIV logo adorns the included vintage-style hardshell case.
