Metallica and over 250 Meyer Sound loudspeakers

Metallica rocks out with San Francisco Symphony and over 250 Meyer Sound loudspeakers

Metallica amped up their performance for two 18,000-strong shows earlier this month, with the help of San Francisco Symphony and a bespoke sound system consisting of over 250 Meyer Sound loudspeakers.(PSNEUROPE)

Staged in the round at San Francisco’s Chase Center for the venue’s grand opening and dubbed S&M2 (in homage to the 20th anniversary of the 1999 S&M concert and the album, S&M, recorded with the same orchestra), the shows had 70-plus musicians encircling the band.

“We decided from the outset that we did not want the orchestra off stage or isolated in any way,” said Braun. “We wanted them on stage, so everybody would be playing together as one band. And instead of separating them on stage, we decided to place the orchestra surrounding the band, with Lars on a drum riser in the middle. It took a major leap of faith by Edwin Outwater (the conductor) as to how we would set it all up, but it worked out brilliantly.”

The Meyer Sound system was custom designed for the unique challenges of S&M2 by director of system optimisation Bob McCarthy with assistance from senior technical support specialist David Vincent and technical support manager, digital systems James Edmondson. The outer ring of loudspeakers, covering the seating bowl, comprised 10 arrays in five stereo pairs, each with six LYON-M loudspeakers over six LYON-W wide coverage loudspeakers.

Metallica donates EUR 250,000 to Romania’s crowdfunded pediatric oncology hospital

Metallica announced on Wednesday, the day of its concert in Bucharest, that it would donate EUR 250,000 towards the construction of the first pediatric oncology and radiotherapy hospital in Romania, which is being built by the Daruieste Viata Association without any support from the Romanian state, using only donations from civil society and the private sector.(business review)

The donation was made through the All Within My Hands Foundation, founded by Metallica. Along with the band’s own contribution of EUR 50,000, they also donated the equivalent of the Main Sponsor package for their concert in Bucharest – EUR 200,000 – provided by Mastercard and BCR.

The band also will film its two upcoming S&M concerts, which take place at San Francisco’s Chase Center on September 6th and 8th, and broadcast it in 3,000 theaters around the world on October 9th.

Tickets for the screenings go on sale tentatively August 7th. For more information visit the group’s specially dedicated page to the broadcast.

Metallica staged their first S&M – shorthand for “Symphony & Metallica” – concerts with the San Francisco Symphony, conducted by Michael Kamen, over two nights in 1999 and released an album and concert film of it later that year. Included in the setlist were two previously unreleased songs, “No Leaf Clover” and “- Human.” The former became a hit, reaching Number One on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and the Number 74 on the Hot 100. The album itself reached Number Two on the Billboard 200.3

Billboard reports that Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett has composed “The Jinn,” his second classical music piece with his wife, Lani.”I’m getting more and more into classical music, classical composers,” the Metallica guitarist said.

“It will come to the museum in a bit, at some point… The title ‘The Jinn’ will hopefully set the mood for how you experience music because it tells a story of the jinn [a Middle Eastern term for genie].”

The guitarist also said:

“I’m getting more and more into classical music, classical composers, and a lot of classical composers take on the horror genre. I want to start orchestrating music, and telling musical stories through music, in much the same way as a lot of these classical guys did in the 19th century, 20th century.”

Metallica -The event celebrated the first anniversary of the band’s All Within My Hands non-profit foundation, which was launched in 2017 to help creating sustainable communities by tackling the issues of hunger and workforce education and encouraging volunteerism.
