2023 has seen the departure of some great guitarists, let's remember some of them and their contribution to music

British musician Denny Laine, the lead singer of rock band The Moody Blues and a guitarist in Sir Paul McCartney’s group Wings, has died aged 79.

Less than three months after Denny Laine’s wife, Elizabeth Hines, started a GoFundMe to help with his “critical” health issues following a serious bout of COVID-19 followed by a bacterial infection, Hines has shared that the rock legend – who co-founded The Moody Blues and Wings alongside Paul and Linda McCartney — died on Tuesday, Dec. 5.

Paul McCartney wrote: I am very saddened to hear that my ex-bandmate, Denny Laine, has died.

I have many fond memories of my time with Denny: from the early days when The Beatles toured with the Moody Blues. Our two bands had a lot of respect for each other and a lot of fun together. Denny joined Wings at the outset. He was an outstanding vocalist and guitar player. His most famous performance is probably ‘Go Now’ an old Bessie Banks song which he would sing brilliantly. He and I wrote some songs together the most successful being ‘Mull of Kintyre’ which was a big hit in the Seventies. We had drifted apart but in recent years managed to reestablish our friendship and share memories of our times together.

I've made five albums in six, seven years. It’s an absurd rate to be cranking albums out. The reason being is that I'm gonna die."

Former bandmate Stephen Sills, with whom Crosby butted heads with over the years, told AFP: “I was happy to be at peace with him.”

“He was without question a giant of a musician, and his harmonic sensibilities were nothing short of genius,” Stills said of Crosby. “The glue that held us together as our vocals soared, like Icarus, towards the sun.”

“I am deeply saddened at his passing and shall miss him beyond measure.”
