“I preferred to play John’s songs rather than Paul’s”Ringo Starr opens up in an interview with Dave Grohl

If you ask any Beatles fan what they believe that The Fab Four’s finest song is you are likely to get a different answer from one day to the next. However, Ringo Starr is adamant about his favourite and it is a rarity that you wouldn’t expect. (Faroutmagazine)

These sessions from the 1966 album would spurn the one recording which Ringo would classify as being the band’s magnum opus. However, the track would never even make it onto the record. ‘Paperback Writer‘ was another gem by The Beatles which somehow didn’t make it on to a full-length album and, instead, was released as a stand-alone release in May 1966. The track would act as the B-Side for Ringo’s favourite Beatles song, the best they ever created, ‘Rain’.

He then went on to detail what exactly he loved about it: “I was into the snare and hi-hat. I think it was the first time I used this trick of starting a break by hitting the hi-hat first instead of going directly to a drum off the hi-hat,” Ringo said. “I think it’s the best out of all the records I’ve ever made.”

Ringo said he generally preferred playing songs John Lennon wrote to those penned by Paul. It was a matter of the songwriters’ individual styles. “John’s songs had ‘a bit more rock ‘n’ roll”

John was much more of a rocker. While Paul was writing songs like “Good Day Sunshine” and “Rigby” for the Revolver album, John’s sound was getting heavier on songs like “Rain” and “Tomorrow Never Knows.” That was the sort of stuff Ringo liked playing drums on.

Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band have pushed their planned spring 2020 North American tour to spring 2021 due to the coronavirus outbreak.

“This is very difficult for me,” Starr said in a statement, “in 30 years I think I’ve only missed two or three gigs, never mind a whole tour. But this is how things are for all of us now, I have to stay in just like you have to stay in, and we all know it’s the peace and loving thing we do for each other. So we have moved the Spring tour to 2021.”

“He has been working on a new record for a few months,” his representative said in an email.

This year’s trek — featuring Starr alongside Steve Lukather, Colin Hay, Gregg Rolie, Warren Ham, Gregg Bissonette and Hamish Stuart — was scheduled to begin May; it will now launch on a pair of to-be-announced 2021 dates in Rama, Ontario before working its way down the East Coast of the U.S., concluding June 27th, 2021 in Clearwater, Florida. Along the way, Starr and his band have booked a three-night stand at New York’s Beacon Theater.

Tickets for the 2020 trek will be honored at the 2021 dates. “My fans know I love them, and I love to play for them and I can’t wait to see you all as soon as possible,” Starr continued. “In the meantime stay safe. Peace and Love to you all.”

Early this yearThe National Trust was accused of 'turning its back' on an important part of Beatles history yesterday after refusing to adopt Ringo Starr's childhood home.

The humble two-up, two-down terraced house in Liverpool attracts thousands of fans every year.
