It’s emerged that Robert Plant performed Led Zeppelin’s ‘Stairway To Heaven’ over the weekend after an anonymous bidder donated a huge sum of money to The Cancer Awareness Trust.
The 75-year-old rock legend’s rendition of ‘Stairway To Heaven’ at Soho Farmhouse in the Cotswolds on Saturday 21st October was the first time he had performed the track since Led Zeppelin’s one-off reunion concert at The O2 in December 2007.
Duran Duran’s Andy Taylor, who is battling stage 4 colon cancer, organized the event, with proceeds benefiting the Cancer Awareness Trust, as UCR reports.
Plant’s performance included renditions of Led Zeppelin's “Thank You” and “Black Dog,” as well as Donovan's “Season of the Witch." Still, it was the unexpected rendition of “Stairway to Heaven” that was the unquestioned highlight of his appearance. Backed by Taylor and many of the night’s performers, Plant tore through the 1971 classic, much to the delight of the crowd in attendance. According to Setlist.fm, the last known time that Plant performed “Stairway to Heaven” was at Led Zeppelin’s 2007 reunion.

The classic Led Zeppelin song that Robert Plant dismissed as “pompous”
Robert Plant said he’d come to feel like a “voyeur” over Led Zeppelin's signature track “Stairway to Heaven.”
In a recent conversation with Vulture, Plant confessed he "often felt estranged" from the song. “It began intimate and vulnerable and sincere, and then the years carried on. It was no longer ours and neither should it be. Now it’s out there driving people to distraction and then maybe driving a hard bargain.”
