Rod Stewart Announces First-Ever Co-Headlining Show with Billy Joel

Billy Joel appears to be developing a thing for co-headlining shows with fellow Rock & Roll Hall of Famers. The Piano Man has just announced his first-ever joint concert with Rod Stewart, and he’s also lined up two more 2024 co-headlining dates with ex-Police frontman Sting.

Both Joel and Stewart will be releasing new music this year. Joel recently announced that he was putting out a song titled “Turn the Lights Back On” on February 1. It’s his first new original tune in more than 16 years.

As for Stewart, he’ll be taking a foray into the big-band era with a new studio album called Swing Fever that’s due out February 23. The record is a collaboration with piano player Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra.

Rod Stewart’s long-running Las Vegas residency The Colosseum at Caesars Palace will be coming to an end next summer. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame singer’s “Rod Stewart – The Hits” show will wrap up with seven newly announced performances taking place July 24, 26, 27, and 31, and August 2, 3, and 7.

He told the Daily Star newspaper's Wired column: "When I go back to Vegas - and I'd like to - if the album's a big success, maybe I could do a swing show, big band stuff."

He added: "That two hours on stage is the most potent drug you can imagine. It's highly addictive.

"It's all the bloody in between time I don't like, sitting in hotel rooms. Although when I am sat around like that, I build my model railroad so that I'm not idle.

"It's something I'm working on for five or six hours a day. While all the banders are sitting around picking their noses, I'm occupied."

News of Stewart’s final Vegas residency shows comes a few days before the 78-year-old singer, songwriter, and entertainer begins a six-date Sin City engagement series at Caesars Palace, with performances scheduled for November 10, 11, 15, 17, 18, and 22.

The 78-year-old rock legend was offered a significant sum to bring his show to the Middle East but declined due to the oppression of "women, the LGBTQ community [and] the press" in the kingdom.

He told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "I’m grateful that I have a choice whether or not to perform in Saudi Arabia. So many citizens there have extremely limited choices… women, the LGBTQ community, the press.

“I’d like my choice not to go… to shine a light on the injustices there and ignite positive change.”

Rod had previously turned down £1 million to bring his live show to Qatar - which hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup - and although the Saudi offer was "much higher" he was never interested in trading his principles for cash.

A source told the publication: "Rod was determined to do the right thing and couldn’t accept the offer, no matter how much money was on the table. Some things are more important."

The 'Maggie May' singer had previously spoke about how he wanted to use his 2016 Knighthood from late British monarch Queen Elizabeth II to do good in the world and highlight charities he supports.

He said: "I usually keep all my charitable efforts nice and quiet and just do it. But I thought, ‘I am a knight, I have been given this knighthood because of the things I’ve achieved in my life and the charity work I’ve done over the years.’

“But that was the past. I want to be seen to be doing something now. I am a knight, I should be using my power to do something for people. I am sure that if there are people out there who see what I am doing, they will pick up some slack too.”

In 2022, Rod - who is married to Lady Penny Lancaster Stewart - rented a house in Berkshire for a family of seven Ukrainians who had fled the war with Russia and paid all their household bills.

He also gave two other refugees jobs at his Essex mansion, working as a gardener and a housekeeper, Bangpremier  reports.

After two years of negotiations with Hipgnosis, a British music intellectual property investment and song management company, Rod Stewart has called off a deal to sell his award-winning catalog.

According to Billboard, Stewart, 78, has opted to maintain the ownership of his work. Whether the hitmaker would sell his full catalog, a portion, or a royalty stream is still being determined.

“This catalog represents my life’s work,” said Stewart. “And it’s [become] abundantly clear after much time and due diligence that this was not the right company to manage my song catalog, career, or legacy.”

The decision to terminate the sale has the music industry divided. Two music asset buyers told the publication that they believe the statement was issued publicly to “drum up business for the catalog” and “to generate calls from potential suitors.”

Meanwhile, others don’t think an artist like Stewart needs to seek public attention to attract potential opportunities.

The announcement comes as a surprise, as Hipgnosis Songs have partnerships with a handful of notable musicians. They have catalogs, publishing rights, and stakes of Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Justin Timberlake, Neil Young, Justin Bieber, and many more.

Stewart’s catalog includes his solo work and his recordings with The Faces and Jeff Beck Group, a British rock ensemble. The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer has become a leading voice in entertainment. The artist was propelled into the spotlight in the 1960s after becoming the frontman of The Jeff Beck Group. Shortly after he received a taste of success with the two bands, he embarked on a solo career. (Americansongwriter)
