Vinyl records were a surprise hit this Christmas, with weekly sales in the UK soaring to their highest level this century during the festive shopping period, fuelled by artists including Taylor Swift, Fleetwood Mac and the Rolling Stones.

Bestselling vinyl albums in 2023 (up to chart week 51)

1. Taylor Swift – 1989 (Taylor’s Version) Swift continues to earn a great reception to the releases of her albums (in response to her masters being sold away from her), and her 2014 smash hit took this year’s vinyl top spot, according to The Guardian.

2. The Rolling Stones – Hackney Diamonds Released in October, this was the Stones’ first album of original material in 18 years and featured a stellar guest-star lineup, making it a guaranteed seller.

3. Lana Del Rey – Did You Know There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd The songwriter’s ninth album, released in March, was a huge success despite the singer eschewing commercial hits for more cryptic, exploratory material.

4. Taylor Swift – Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) Swift rereleased her 2010 album in the summer and it was an instant hit with fans, becoming her 10th UK No 1 album.

5. Fleetwood Mac – Rumours The classic 1977 album is a staple of most vinyl collections and appears in the top 10 bestsellers for an eight consecutive year.

6. Blur – The Ballad of Darren The ninth studio album from the beloved British rock band received rave reviews and features in the Guardian’s top 10 best albums of 2023.

7. Pink Floyd – The Dark Side of the Moon Like Rumours, the iconic album cover of this 1972 Pink Floyd classic can be found in many vinyl collections and it frequently bags a bestseller spot.

8. Taylor Swift – Midnights Although it has been more than a year since Swift released this surprise new album – her 10th – a number of special editions probably helped it to retain a top spot.

9. Olivia Rodrigo – Guts The second album from the Gen Z icon was also this year’s bestselling cassette tape, showing that new generations of music fans are fully embracing the physical formats decades after their heyday.

10. Lewis Capaldi – Broken by Desire to be Heavenly Sent The highly anticipated follow-up to Capaldi’s mammoth hit debut album was released in May and was an instant success with fans of his mournful ballads.

The Rolling Stones’ Hackney Diamonds returns to No. 1 on the U.K. albums chart this week, making it the time first time that the British rock legends have ever scored a Christmas Number 1 album in their homeland.

Hackney Diamonds was released on October 20, and debuted at the top of the U.K.’s Official Albums Chart the following week.

“It’s a wonderful way to round off 2023,” the band said in a joint statement to the Official Charts Company. “Thank you to everyone for listening to Hackney Diamonds. Have a very happy Christmas and New Year!”

Mick Jagger has spoken about working with Paul McCartney on The Rolling Stones‘ upcoming new album ‘Hackney Diamonds’. And Ronnie Wood about Lady Gaga.

McCartney had played bass on a song called ‘Bite My Head Off’. He’ll appear on ‘Hackney Diamonds’ alongside Lady Gaga, Elton John and Stevie Wonder.

"We've been doing a little rehearsing to see how these songs translate live," Wood explains. "And they're really cooking."

“I can say it’s about time,” he tells Fallon. “It feels so exciting. Because I’m so excited about every track on it, every track has something to say and a different direction.”

During a recent interview with Q on CBC, host Tom Power asked Jagger how the collaboration with Macca came about, as NME reports.

“Paul was in LA when we were recording, and he was supposed to work with Andy (producer Andrew Watt) one week,” the frontman replied. “Andy said,‘I forgot to tell you — I’m supposed to work with Paul this week,'” Jagger recalled. “So we worked out the schedule and [Watt] said, ‘Why don’t we get Paul to come in and play on something?'”

The song went in a direction many Paul fans and Rolling Stones fans might find surprising. “We suggested he played on this punk tune,” Jagger recalled. “I didn’t know how it was gonna work out, but he really rocked it and he loved doing it. He said, ‘It’s great playing with a band! Really enjoyable playing with a band.'”

‘I’m working on this record (‘Hackney Diamonds’), and if it takes six months I’m gonna do nothing else’.

“Suddenly we get to this one week and he says, ‘I forgot to tell you – I’m supposed to work with Paul this week’. So we worked out the schedule and Watt  said, ‘Why don’t we get Paul to come in and play on something?'”

Jagger continued: “So I said, ‘On what?’ I’ve never played bass with Paul – I’ve sung with him but I haven’t played bass.

“We suggested he played on this punk tune. I didn’t know how it was gonna work out, but he really rocked it and he loved doing it. He said, ‘It’s great playing with a band! Really enjoyable playing with a band’.”

McCartney and the Stones were all in the same room together for the session. “I’m playing guitar, Keith’s playing guitar, Paul’s playing bass, Ronnie’s playing guitar,” he recalled.

“Paul was so natural and relaxed and he enjoyed it. We knocked it out really quick.”
