Originally released December 18, 2020, McCartney III is the third in a trilogy of home-made self-titled albums that began with Paul’s milestone 1970 solo debut McCartney, and continued in 1980 with the bold, experimental McCartney II. All three albums were written, performed and produced by Paul in varying states of isolation, all showcasing his unique creativity and inspired spontaneity. Recorded in “Rockdown” in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, McCartney III saw Paul turn unexpected time on his hands into an opportunity to get into the studio on his own. An intimate and revelatory record, McCartney III features Paul’s melodic gift at its forefront throughout. Upon release, McCartney III charted at #1 on both the UK’s Official Album Charts and Billboard’s Top Album Sales Chart.

The Beatles legend’s 18th solo studio album is the third and final chapter in a trilogy of albums including his debut album McCartney from 1970 and McCartney II which followed ten years later in 1980; the former reached Number 2 on the Official Albums Chart, with the latter charting at Number 1.

In the visual, he’s seen in multiple split-screen as he performs the song. He takes on all the parts: singing and harmonizing while playing all the instruments for the track — among them guitar, bass, piano and the drums.

The former Beatle premiered the video on Released with Chris Rock, sharing details behind the album with the comedian. “If I like something that’s going a bit Beatle-y, I just gotta ‘Let it Be,'” McCartney joked during their discussion. He also revealed that his favorite track from the album is “Women and Wives” and he played a bit of it while they talked.

“We realized we were writing songs that were memorable, not because wanted them to be memorable, but because we had to remember them,” McCartney tells Rubin of the Beatles music.

While McCartney did not shared any other details about the documentary event, Deadline reported that the project is “a six-part documentary series that will amount to a behind-the-scenes magical mystery tour of McCartney’s unbelievable musical journey. Rubin will be there to explore the music and musicianship of McCartney, from his first guitar and composition all the way to through the legendary and prolific success of the Beatles.”

The trailer is also laced with different takes of the Beatles’ music; Deadline adds that the documentary will mark “the first time ever that the [Beatles] original masters have left Abbey Road.”

A release date and streaming service/network home for the untitled documentary series event has not yet been revealed, but the McCartney site says, “Keep your eyes peeled in 2021 for more information.”

The new issue of Uncut features a world exclusive interview with the one and only Paul McCartney.

You said some of the songs on McCartney III had been around for a while. Do you often look in the cupboard?
"The problem with iPhones is that you can have an idea – “Doo do doo do come on bam bam” – and you think, ‘That’s good, I’ll finish this later.’ Then you realise you’ve got 2,000 of these ideas on your phone! ‘Oh, God! Am I ever going to get round to them?!’ So lockdown allowed me to get round to a lot of them. But I do have a list of songs that I started but didn’t actually finish or release."

Sir Paul McCartney has confessed he wishes he were more like Bob Dylan in not caring what other people think of him and his music.
