The collection of alternative versions of some of Petty’s most beloved songs first appeared on the 2020 collection ‘Wildflowers & All The Rest’, an expansive retrospective of 1994’s ‘Wildflowers’, which was produced by Rick Rubin.
Made up of 16 alternate takes, long cuts, and jam versions that didn’t make it on the original LP, ‘Finding Wildflowers (Alternate Versions)’ also includes the 1992 track ‘You Saw Me Comin”, which had been unreleased until the release of ‘Wildflowers & All the Rest’.
In addition to being made available digitally, ‘Finding Wildflowers (Alternate Versions)’ has also been released on CD and as a limited-edition gold vinyl. Listen to the album on Spotify below.
Last year Bob Dylan honored the late Tom Petty by covering his song “Learning to Fly” during the encore of his concert in Broomfield, Colorado. The performance followed what would’ve been Petty’s Birthday on October 20.
Dylan had toured with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers as his backing band in 1986. Shortly thereafter, Bob and Tom would form Traveling Wilburys with fellow icons Roy Orbison, George Harrison and Jeff Lynne. Last night’s Bob Dylan show ended with a cover of “Learning To Fly” from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ 1991 album Into The Great Wide Open. The cover took place one day after what would have been Petty’s 67th birthday.
The performance, a surprise deviation from Dylan's usually rigid setlists, came one day after what would have been Petty's 67th birthday.
"Learning to Fly" was composed by Petty and Jeff Lynne, also known as Charlie T. Wilbury, Jr. and Otis Wilbury when they – along with Dylan, Harrison and Roy Orbison – performed together in the rock supergroup Traveling Wilburys.“It’s shocking, crushing news. I thought the world of Tom. He was a great performer, full of the light, a friend, and I’ll never forget him.”
