Haim have said they are “at a loss for words” after seeing Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks dedicate their popular hit ‘Hallelujah ‘to Christine McVie, who tragically passed away on Wednesday.

‘Hallelujah’, not to be confused with Leonard Cohen’s 1984 classic, was released in 2020 on Haim’s third studio album, Women In Music Pt. III. Alana Haim wrote the track in memory of her best friend, who died at the age of 21.

Nicks said yesterday: “Since Saturday, one song has been swirling around in my head, over and over and over. I thought I might possibly get to sing it to her, and so I’m singing it to her now. I always knew I would need these words one day. (Written by the Ladies Haim). It’s all I can do now…”

Alana Haim responded to the emotional tribute in a post on Instagram: “I’m at a loss for words…I would listen to Fleetwood Mac with my best friend Sammi Kane Kraft constantly.

I wrote my verse to hallelujah to try to help me heal after she had passed. Seeing Stevie and Christine together changed my life forever and made me want to play music. I’m speechless. I love you so much, Stevie, rip beautiful songbird.”

Haim also paid their own tribute to McVie following the news of her death. “We write this with tears in our eyes and all over our faces,” they wrote. “The sisterhood Stevie and Christine had was so vital to us growing up.

Eeeing two strong women support each other in our favorite band has had such a huge impact on us throughout our lives. from playing ‘say that you love me’ in rockinhaim since 1999 to seeing christine sing ‘over my head’ live in 2015, she has been a constant inspiration. rip beautiful songbird.” (Faroutmagazine)

Stevie Nicks: "I Used to Make Christine McVie Nuts and Jealous "

Though some blowups were markedly worse than others, the entire band bickered, even close friends Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie

Several years after joining Fleetwood Mac, Nicks said she recognized that there were times when McVie was fed up with her. She shared she initially had no idea that McVie felt negatively toward her. (cheatsheet)

Nicks and McVie became fast friends after the former joined Fleetwood Mac in 1975. McVie knew that getting along would be vital as they were the only women in the band.

“It was critical that I got on with her because I’d never played with another girl,” McVie told The Guardian. “But I liked her instantly. She was funny and nice but also there was no competition. We were completely different on the stage to each other and we wrote differently too.”

“Christine very willingly gave me the stage, which I thought was very cool for a woman to say: ‘Oh, she’s five years younger than me and I’ve worked for ten years on the road, killed myself, and here she is, our new frontwoman,’” Nicks said in 1981, per the book Fleetwood Mac on Fleetwood Mac: Interviews and Encounters. “It was incredibly big of Christine to just move out of the way, because I do tend to kind of animate around and I drive Chris nuts. Crazy.”

“Chris will tell you that there were times in the last six or seven years when she was a little jealous. And I swear to God I never knew,” Nicks explained. “Never one comment to the effect of ‘I could really have done without you.’ And I’m sure there were times when I’m flying around the stage in my gossamer chiffon where she had to think to herself: ‘Wow, what’s this? Fairy school?’ and never once did she make me feel that.”

Nicks explained that McVie took her emotions into consideration and didn’t say anything harsh.

Stevie Nicks tried to be ‘sweet’ to Lindsey Buckingham for the sake of Fleetwood Mac
she tried to keep the peace to make sure that the group wasn’t ruined.

Stevie told The New Yorker magazine: “You just have to throw yourself into your song. I mean, I broke up with Lindsey in 1976. We’d only been in Fleetwood Mac for a year and a half, and we were breaking up when we joined Fleetwood Mac. Source (Socialitelife)

“So we just put our relationship kind of back together, because I was smart enough to know that, if we had broken up the second month of being in Fleetwood Mac, it would have blown the whole thing.”

Stevie continued: “I just bided my time, and tried to make everything as easy as possible, tried to be as sweet and nice to Lindsey as I could be. He wasn’t happy, either.

THE ALBUM THAT TAUGHT ME TO SING HARMONY  was Crosby, Stills & Nash, Crosby, Stills & Nash (1969)I spent a whole summer singing along to this record. I loved the harmonies, and learned to sing all three of the parts. I knew that I wanted to be in a band with the same kind of harmonies.

Christine McVie rejoined the band after nearly two decades away
In 1998, McVie had mounting anxiety about flying, something that was necessary for touring internationally. So, she decided to trade in rock and roll for a quiet life in the English countryside.
