“The record It’s very well-balanced and well-constructed, dynamically and musically, and I think the humanity of its approach is appealing. It’s satisfying. I think also that it was the first album of that kind. People often quote S. F. Sorrow by The Pretty Things as being from a similar mould – they were both done in the same studio at about the same time – but I think it was probably the first completely cohesive album that was made.”
Touching on how the record signalled the end for the group, Waters continued: “A concept album, mate! I always thought it would be hugely successful. I had the same feelings about The Wall. Towards the end of the studio work, at about the time I’d be putting the tracks together, there was a very good feeling of satisfaction on both records. You’d stand back from them and they’d each feel very complete”.
Concluding: “But of course, Dark Side Of The Moon finished the Pink Floyd off once and for all. To be that successful is the aim of every group. And once you’ve cracked it, it’s all over. In hindsight, I think the Pink Floyd was finished as long ago as that.” (Farout)
‘Wish you weren’t here’: Why I’ve re-recorded 'The Dark Side' by mymself without Pink Floyd,
The new album includes narration by Waters, who speaks over many instrumental parts of the record.
Waters acknowledged a potential issue with the release, stating: “I’m no copyright expert, but might there be some obstacles to that? I have no idea.”
The musician also tore into his bandmates, including the late keyboardist Rick Wright, claiming they “can’t write” lyrics.
“Well, Nick [Mason, drummer] never pretended. But Gilmour and Rick? They can’t write songs, they’ve nothing to say. They are not artists. They have no ideas – not a single one between them. They never have had, and that drives them crazy.” (The Independnt reports)
Discussing the re-record, Waters, 79, told The Telegraph: “I wrote The Dark Side of the Moon. Let’s get rid of all this ‘we’ crap. Of course we were a band – there were four of us, we all contributed – but it’s my project and I wrote it, so, blah.”
It’s worth noting that, while Waters wrote the album’s lyrics, he didn’t compose the music for five of the album’s 10 tracks.
