Jennifer Lopez This Is Me... Movie review: what the hell did I just watch?

By editorial board on February 18, 2024

An earnest onslaught of heavy-handed heartbreak metaphors weigh down this totally bizarre, and mostly quite boring, film

Before diving into the pulsing metal heart of J-Lo’s new fantastically-styled love story This Is Me… Now I should probably issue a quick disclaimer: even though this is among the most unhinged pieces of film imaginable, I completely understand what on earth possessed her to make it. - The Evening Standard Review.

To be honest, if I happened to have a spare $20 million kicking about, the temptation to make an incredibly extra, metaphor-riddled quasi-musical about my trials and tribulations of the heart would be irresistible.

he problem is that it wouldn’t be a very sensible way to spend it. While proper, full-blown heartbreak hurts in a way that makes you feel like you are officially the only living person in history to ever feel this rotten - ever! - most of us have been there, done that, and got the ill-advised break-up haircut to show for it. Bluntly, I can’t see a cinematic recreation of ‘every single time I got dumped’ making for very interesting viewing for anybody apart from me, or possibly my rightfully concerned ex. And on watching this film, I learned that this is something that continues to hold true for everybody across the board: yes, even if you’re Jennifer Lopez.

This Is Me...Then (which mostly dealt with her engagement to now-husband Ben Affleck), the multi-hyphenate singer, actress and performer has announced that her ninth studio album will be now be released next year.

The project has been in works for a while, and was initially teased at the end of 2022, with Lopez saying that the album will be a "emotional, spiritual, and psychological journey she has taken over the past two decades." (It's worth noting, of course that in between the two albums, Lopez and Affleck split up, only to the surprisingly reconcile and marry in 2022, proving that love is very much still alive).

Jennifer Lopez has teamed up with Italian intimates brand Intimissimi for a new lingerie line inspired by her upcoming album, This Is Me…Now.

The lingerie line, which is also tiled the same name as the album, went live on October 20.

This marks the second collection between Lopez and Intimissimi, of which the singer is a brand ambassador.

It’s been 20 years since Jennifer Lopez dropped This Is Me … Then, and in honor of the set’s anniversary, the star has announced a follow-up to that album titled This Is Me … Now, set to drop next year.

Calling it a “musical experience,” the project will chronicle the “emotional, spiritual and psychological journey” that Lopez has taken over the past two decades, according to a press release. In a teaser in which she announces This Is Me … Now, J.Lo says: “We captured me at this moment in time. If you have, like me at times, lost hope, almost given up, don’t. And that’s real. And I want to put that message out to the world.”
