Alicia Keys Talks New Music, Feels Upcoming Album Will Be “One Of The Best Ones I’ve Ever Done”
Alicia Keys has new music on the way. The New York native shared plans to release new tunes in alignment with her Broadway play Hell’s Kitchen and beyond. Speaking with VIBE at the launch event for her latest Athleta collection, the 42-year-old detailed what’s on her musical horizon.
“I think that’s what is so cool about Hell’s Kitchen. There is new music with Hell’s Kitchen and there’s also some of your favorites, but the way that it’s done, you will never expect it,” explained Keys.
“It’s not going to be the way you expect it to be, but when you figure out what it is, you’re going to be like, ‘Wow. First of all, I’ve always loved that song and I’m hearing it in a new way, or it has a new meaning to me.’ I love how the music is a part of Hell’s Kitchen. It’s not normal, in a great way, but you still get what you’re looking for. That’s a part of it. You’re going to hear some new music, which is exciting.”
Recently Alicia Keys brightened the commute of train passengers by giving a surprise performance at London’s St Pancras International.
The nine-time Grammy Award-winning musician and producer performed some of her biggest hits including Empire State of Mind, If I Ain’t Got You and No One, plus her latest single, Lifeline, which is the first release from soundtrack of the upcoming film The Color Purple. New York native Keys’ appearance was in honour of the release of The Diary of Alicia Keys 20, a special edition of her multi-platinum selling, chart-topping sophomore album, which originally debuted in 2003.
Recently Alicia Keys has reimagined her 2004 track ‘If I Ain’t Got You’ with an orchestra featuring over 70 women of colour.
The track was recorded for the Netflix series Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, which arrived last week, and has been released with an accompanying music video.
The Bridgerton spin-off series follows a young Charlotte (India Amarteifio) as she begins to understand her power and the meaning of love. The story sees her embark on a life-changing marriage with young King George (Corey Mylchreest), while spearheading a societal shift that will lead to generations of change in the Bridgerton world.
“The entire idea was quite ambitious,” Keys told Billboard. “I feel like it’s going to open the minds of many people to realize that women of color belong everywhere and we’ve always been everywhere. It’s magical.”
She continued: “I know they’re gonna be very emotional when they see it because the women who were there were extremely emotional. Our conductor [Ofentse Pitse] said, ‘It feels like when we have an orchestra of all women of color from all over the world, that we’re finally doing something right.’ This is what our ancestors never experienced.”
