The new thriller sees Hathaway play a pop star and perform original music written by Charli XCX. For the film, Hathaway performed new songs written by Charli XCX and produced by Antonoff, who also worked with her as a “guide”. Hathaway’s performance of the track ‘Burial’ was released back in March, and can be heard here.
Now, the actress has opened up about working as a musician for the film, saying the experience was “humbling”.
However, in a new interview with Discussing Film, she explained how the experience differed from working as a musical theatre actress. “It’s kind of like asking if a ten-speed bike and a Harley are the same thing,” she said. “Technically, yeah, it’s the same genus, but the specifics are completely different, and I had to learn how to ride a Harley, you know, the intricacies of the voice to the microphone.

Anne Hathaway sings Charli XCX-penned track ‘Burial’ from the ‘Mother Mary’ soundtrack
A24 have released the first song from the upcoming Mother Mary film, which sees Anne Hathaway sing a track penned by Charli XCX.
Arriving in cinemas on April 17, Mother Mary sees Hathaway play a pop star who abruptly ends her tour after an emotional crisis before reconnecting with an estranged friend and fashion designer (Michaela Coel) to prepare for a comeback performance.
Written and directed by David Lowery (The Green Knight), the trailer arrived in December, and now the first song has been shared from the soundtrack.
The song also features production from Bleachers’ frontman Jack Antonoff and from The 1975’s George Daniel – who tied the knot with Charli last year.
This isn’t the first time that Hathaway has gotten involved in the soundtracks to her films, having also taken on singing roles in both the 2012 film adaptation of Les Misérables, and in 2011’s animated film, Rio.
Hathaway's Mother Mary is the first of five films she will appear in that release in 2026. She also reprises her role as Andy Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada 2, in theaters May 1, and in July, she will star opposite Matt Damon in Christopher Nolan's adaptation of The Odyssey. In August, Hathaway and Ewan McGregor costar as a couple whose home is magically transported to a mysterious location inhabited by dinosaurs in The End of Oak Street, and in October, she costars with Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett in the big screen adaptation of Colleen Hoover's novel Verity.
