A message on her Facebook page reads: “Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for.”

In May, Tyler had undergone emergency intestinal surgery at a hospital near Faro, Portugal, where she lived. She was later put into an induced coma in an attempt to assist her recovery. She was then taken out of the coma, but a representative said she remained “very unwell and in intensive care”.

Last month, her spokesperson updated fans, revealing that Tyler was out of the coma but remained "very unwell and in intensive care".

Tyler is best known for her power ballad Total Eclipse of the Heart, which topped the charts in the U.S. and U.K. in 1983 and surpassed a billion streams on Spotify earlier this year.

Born Gaynor Hopkins in Neath, Wales, the singer was also known for songs such as Lost in France, More Than a Lover and Holding Out for a Hero, which she recorded for the soundtrack to the 1984 movie Footloose.

Tyler represented the U.K. at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013, performing the song Believe In Me, and came 19th out of 26 acts.

Throughout her career, the star received three Grammy Award nominations and three Brit Award nominations. She was awarded an MBE for her services to music in 2022.

Tyler married Olympic judo competitor-turned-property developer Robert Sullivan in 1973. They had no children.
