The 77-year-old music icon has been producing hits since 1968, married producer David Furnish in 2014, and is the proud father of two children; Zachary, 13, and Elijah, 11 - who he shares with Furnish.

Following the premiere of his autobiographical film Elton John: Never Too Late at the Roy Thomson Hall, the star said, "On my tombstone, I don't want it to say he sold a million records. I want it to say he was a great dad and great husband."

"I have been quietly spending the summer recuperating at home, and am feeling positive about the progress I have made in my healing and recovery thus far".

Sir Elton John smiled as he walked the red carpet at the Toronto Film Festival premiere of the new documentary on Friday (6 September) - his first public appearance since announcing that he suffered a “severe eye infection” that left his vision impaired.

The British singer-songwriter, 77, joined Elton John: Never Too Late co-directors - his husband David Furnish and RJ Cutler - to pose for photographs.

Sir Elton said the infection left him with "limited vision in one eye" and the healing process was "extremely slow."

"It will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye,” he added.

The pop icon took to his official Instagram account to share a statement explaining his current vision issues and how they came to be. He explained that the issues arose during this summer and shared that he is slowly healing.

“l’ve been dealing with a severe eye infection that has unfortunately left me with only limited vision in one eye. I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye,” began his statement.

He continued: “I am so grateful for the excellent team of doctors and nurses and my family, who have taken such good care of me over the last several weeks. I have been quietly spending the summer recuperating at home, and am feeling positive about the progress I have made in my healing and recovery thus far.”
