Sir Elton John is celebrating his 77th birthday today. The singer, who is worth £450 million, has faced tough times in his life including battles with drug and alcohol addiction, hip problems and a prostate cancer scare.

Sir Elton John has become the 19th person in history to achieve an “EGOT”.

The honour, an acronym which stands for “Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony”, is unofficially bestowed upon entertainers who have managed to win the biggest awards in the four fields.

John earned the title with a win at the 2024 Emmys in the early hours of Tuesday (16 January), for his Disney+ concert programme Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium.

The special, which chronicled John’s final US performance at the end of his farewell tour, had been nominated in the Outstanding Variety Special (live) category.

Streaming numbers for the Elton John classic “Rocket Man” are as high as a kite. On January 5, John took to social media to announce that the 1972 song has amassed 1 billion streams on Spotify, and continues to gain listens.

The star once told chat show host Ellen DeGeneres: "If you'd had said to me 10 years ago I'd be sitting on your show married to the man I love and have two beautiful children I would have said 'You put acid in my drink'," adding that "But life throws you challenges and life throws you curveballs - great curveballs."

Once, Liza Minnelli's husband tried to kill Elton John. Ironically, Elton John apparently doesn't see anything wrong with talking about somebody else's bedroom activities, and for doing so, he almost paid the ultimate price.

David Gest’s bodyguard reveals furious star ‘hired a hitman to kill Elton John at a gig’ after the singer suggested he was ‘gay’.

Liza Minnelli married music producer David Gest. Alluding to perceptions that the flamboyant Gest was secretly gay, as well as to the fact that Minnelli's first husband, songwriter Peter Allen, was a gay man, John reportedly remarked that he'd "like to buy Liza Minnelli a heterosexual husband."

When asked Elton John when he first realized he was gay, and John shared some awkward anecdotes about his burgeoning teenage sexuality. In one story, John didn't choose his words very carefully.

According to The Sun, that nasty joke made Gest so angry that he allegedly ordered a hit on John.   His best friend and bodyguard, Imad Handi, claimed Gest gave him $25,000 to arrange John's murder. Handi said he set the whole thing up but got cold feet and successfully begged Gest to call the whole thing off just days before the scheduled hit in 2003.

He looked me in the eyes and said, ‘I want him dead’.“I think he was so angry because Elton rumbled who he really was.” Gest was living in Honolulu when he read Sir Elton’s comments. Imad recalled: “David spent a lot of time in the bars and got talking to a Maori doorman who was connected on the island. “David approached him about the possibility of bumping Elton off.
