Matthew Perry’s death not caused by meth or fentanyl overdose, toxicology report confirms

By VMZ Staff on November 5, 2023

On Wednesday (November 1), TMZ reported that no trace of either drug was found in the late Friends star’s system at the time of his death. However, law enforcement officials said further tests are being conducted after the results of his initial post-mortem report were “inconclusive”.

Matthew Perry’s fans are still there for him — they’ve been streaming the “Friends” theme song “I’ll Be There for You” non-stop since the actor’s shocking death Saturday.

The Rembrandts tune has had over 1.3 million streams across Spotify and YouTube this week.

Singer Charlie Puth, 31, even performed the song at his concert in Melbourne, Australia on Sunday before transitioning into his 2015 hit “See You Again,” which was written for the film “Furious 7” as a tribute to Paul Walker.

The Los Angeles Police Department’s robbery-homicide detectives are investigating the death. The cause of death will be determined at a later date by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.

“We are devastated by the passing of our dear friend Matthew Perry,” Warner Bros. Television Group, which produced “Friends,” said in a statement to The Times. “Matthew was an incredibly gifted actor and an indelible part of the Warner Bros. Television Group family. The impact of his comedic genius was felt around the world, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of so many. This is a heartbreaking day, and we send our love to his family, his loved ones, and all of his devoted fans.”

Perry, the son of actor John Bennett Perry and Suzanne Marie Langford, onetime press secretary of Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, was born in 1969 and grew up between Montreal and Los Angeles after his parents separated when Perry was 1.

In his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing, Perry reflected extensively on his struggles with drugs and alcohol and noted while he was promoting the book that he had been clean for 18 months but had “probably spent $9 million or something trying to get sober.”
