Garbage’s Shirley Manson 'Video Guide To Swearing' “I don’t have to be young, I don’t have to be sexy

The icon tells us about using "hope as an act of resistance" on new album 'Let All That We Imagine Be The Light', the Kneecap controversy and fighting back against sexist tabloids

“I’ve never really written about love very much. I always think it’s been written about by people a thousand more talented than me. I’m just not a romantic person, really. After my mum died and then Veela [Manson’s ‘soul dog’], I realised I had to touch love somewhere, somehow. I’ve got an amazing marriage and I love my husband so much, but I also realised that in order to move on through a different passage in my life I had to reach out to find all the different types of love: the world, nature, the ocean, friends, my bandmates, my family

Garbage have shared a defiant new track called ‘Get Out My Face AKA Bad Kitty’, which tackles the “absolute war on women in America”.

The track marks the second preview of the band’s forthcoming studio album ‘Let All That We Imagine Be The Light’, which is set for release on May 30 and marks the follow-up to 2021’s ‘No Gods No Masters’, as NME reports.

Following on from the politically charged lead single ‘There’s No Future In Optimism’, the latest single sees frontwoman Shirley Manson and co. take aim at the double standards in society, and channel her outrage at how minorities are still being treated in the modern day.

“When I was young, I didn’t really notice how things worked. People like to shuffle older women off the lot, because you start to see the chessboard in a way you didn’t when you were younger,” Manson explained of the inspiration behind the song.

“When you’re young, you’re wanting to get on with your life, have an adventure, do what you love, and you’re conditioned by the society that you grew up in, so a lot of the time you don’t see what’s going on,” she added. “Then, as you get older, you start to see how things are stacked up against some of us – not all of us. I am outraged by the way the world treats blacks and browns and gays and trans peoples and animals and women.”

“Living in America over the last couple of years, the absolute war on women in America is astounding,” she added. “All the rights that we felt had been secured are starting to get pushed back into the Middle Ages. It is something that I can no longer tolerate silently. It’s not just infuriating, it’s alarming. It’s frightening.”
