Grateful Dead guitarist founder Bob Weir dies

The guitarist, singer and founding member of the Grateful Dead, has died at the age of 78.

Bob Weir, guitarist, singer and founding member of the Grateful Dead, has died at age 78 with a statement released on Saturday that confirmed the passing of one of America's biggest rock legends. He died of “underlying lung issues” following his cancer diagnosis in July 2025.

His death was announced on Saturday in a statement from his team. A spokesperson for Bob Weir said via the statement: "It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Bobby Weir. He transitioned peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, after courageously beating cancer as only Bobby could. Unfortunately, he succumbed to underlying lung issues."

The statement went on to remember Weir's significant on music, with the US music industry now in mourning after the loss of a rock and roll titan.

The San Francisco-born musician joined a band called The Warlocks in 1965, which would go on to morph into the Grateful Dead, one of the most iconic bands in American history.
