Keith Richards – Eric Clapton
Keith Richard's no. 1 guitar is a 1954 Fender Telecaster named Micawber. And this particular instrument was given to Keith for his 27th by Eric Clapton.
Richards did a few changes on this instrument though. After some time, the pickups were replaced by Keith's guitar tech, so this Fender's got a Gibson PAF humbucker on the neck position and a Fender lap-steel pickup on the bridge. And Richard uses it as a 5-string in G–D–G–B–D tuning.
The guitar is named after the Charles Dickens' "David Copperfield" character Wilkins Micawber. Richards started calling it like that sometime in the 1980s.
Jimmy Page – Joe Walsh
One of Jimmy Page's most used Les Pauls that rocked on most of Led Zeppelin records once belonged to Joe Walsh. Back in 1969 when Walsh was still a member of James Gang, Page bought it for $1,200. As Walsh explained in an old interview:
"He [Jimmy Page] really liked it, so I gave him a good deal, about $1,200. I had to hand-carry it; plus I flew there and everything. So whatever my expenses were, that's what I charged him... I just thought he should have a Les Paul, for godsakes!"
The serial number was removed when it was in Walsh's possession, but many experts agree that the guitar is manufactured sometime in late 1959 or early 1960.
Albert Lee – Eric Clapton
In a last year's interview with Guitarist magazine, Albert Lee was asked about one guitar that he'd save from a fire. This is what he answered:
"I guess it would be Eric [Clapton]'s Les Paul Custom that he gave me, because that would be the guitar that would be worth the most! If my house was burning down, I'd need to start from scratch, y'know?"
The guitar in question is a '58 Les Paul Custom, popularly known as Black Beauty, that Clapton used with Cream. Clapton gave it to Lee in the late 1970s when two of them were playing together.
Ritchie Blackmore – Eric Clapton
Now, it seems like we could have named this article "Eric Clapton Gives Away Guitars for Free." Well, anyway, Ritchie Blackmore is also one of the musicians that got blessed by one of Eric Clapton's guitars. As Blackmore explained recently:
"I first got my Strat indirectly through Eric Clapton. He gave his roadie, who is my friend, a Strat that he didn't want. He [the roadie] gave it to me, and that's when I started playing the Strat."
Even though Blackmore used Gibson 335 in earlier days of Deep Purple, he became known as one of the most frequent Strat users of all time. Here's a video in which Blackmore uses the aforementioned guitar.
