Pete Davidson is set to star as Joey Ramone in an upcoming Netflix biopic about the late Ramones legend, I Slept With Joey Ramone. The announcement comes on the 20th anniversary of Ramone’s April 15th, 2001 death.
The Saturday Night Live star and his frequent collaborator Jason Orley also penned the treatment for the film — based on the 2010 memoir by the same name written by Ramone’s brother Mickey Leigh
Johnny, Ramone whose real name was John Cummings, died at his home in Los Angeles in 2004 after losing a valiant 10-year battle with prostate cancer.
His sad passing follows the deaths of two other founding members of America’s legendary punk-rock band, which churned out 21 albums between 1976 and 1996.
Dee Dee Ramone died from a heroin overdose in June 2002, and Joey Ramone from lymphatic cancer in April 2001. The only living original member is now drummer Tommy Ramone.
On Friday, April 13, loved ones prepared for the worst. Joey was moved to the intensive-care unit, hooked up to a morphine drip. He had a blood infection that wasn’t responding to antibiotics, but there was one last round to try, one final hope that things would turn around. With Joey, anything was possible. Bono called him that day, and although Joey was pretty out of it, hearing from the longtime Ramones admirer made him very happy. But on Sunday, all hope had faded. Friends and family gathered bedside, including Joey’s brother, guitarist Mickey Leigh, and their mother, Charlotte Lesher. Joey kept a boom box next to him, and when he nodded, Mickey played him the U2 song “In a Little While.”

When the song ended, Joey was gone. The King of Punk passed away on Easter Sunday, the last day of Passover. He was 49. (SPIN:COM)
