The night of John Belushi's tragic death. In the book The Castle on Sunset written by the historian of Hollywood stars, Shawn Levy, he recounts details about the period during which the great comedian stayed at the famous Los Angeles hotel, the Chateau Marmont. It is precisely there, in fact, that the artist died exactly 38 years ago, on March 5, 1982.
John arrived at this hotel on February 28th and was in very bad shape: he was visibly tired, unkempt, disheveled and pale. He settled in one of the bungalows: he needed quiet to write his new film, Noble Rot, a romantic comedy for which he also wanted the opinion of writers, producers and colleagues. That's why in those days many went to visit him at the hotel to take a look at his script. Apparently, however, the work was not progressing well: his manager, Bernie Brillstein, as well as the executives of Paramount Pictures were not at all happy with what he had written so far.
It soon became clear to everyone that John Belushi was not well at all: he wasn't sleeping, couldn't concentrate, skipped appointments, talked in an uncoordinated and incoherent way, walked around in dirty clothes and had no care of himself, probably not even. he washed; later, moreover, it was discovered that he lived in a real dunghill, because in those days his bungalow was filled with garbage and had become unlivable. Everyone suspected that the actor was abusing drugs and their intuition turned out to be the right one.
On March 4, therefore the day before Belushi's death, De Niro was also staying in the hotel and was about to go out with actor Harry Dean Stanton when he decided to call his friend to invite him to spend the evening with them, before dinner. and then in a nightclub. Obviously Belushi didn't answer the calls, so they went to visit him at the bungalow and found him in a disgusting state, with dirty linen, trash, bottles of alcohol and junk everywhere. Belushi was in the company of a woman named Cathy Smith and suggested that his friends come back to see him later; De Niro was happy to leave after having witnessed that spectacle.
The next morning at 8 o'clock room service arrived in Belushi's bungalow: the woman who was with him, Cathy, had breakfast and then left, while John was still snoring noisily on the bed. Shortly after, the actor was found unconscious by Bill Wallace, his personal trainer and bodyguard. When he arrived he found Wallace desperate trying to give Belushi mouth to mouth but it was too late because he was dead.
