A U.S. postage stamp commemorating John Lennon‘s legacy was unveiled at a Friday ceremony at New York’s Central Park, with the late Beatles legend’s widow Yoko Ono and son Sean Lennon in attendance.
“I know that my father would have been really thrilled to be accepted, officially in this way, on a stamp,” Sean Lennon said at the event. “About as official as it gets, I think.”
Stamps for Lennon.The United States Postal Service announced this past Tuesday that among its stamp subjects for 2018 is former Beatle, John Lennon, as part of the Music Icon series. He joins other stars in the series including Jimi 
Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, and Lydia Mendoza.
Royal Mail instead had honoured Bowie, The Beatles in 2010 and Pink Floyd in 2015 are the only previous music acts to be honoured with an entire “stamp issue” of this kind. Bowie is the first solo music artist to be honoured by Royal Mail in this way.
The Guardian now reports that 52 sets of the stamps – representing the 52 years of Bowie’s career – have been propelled into the stratosphere as an apparent homage to Bowie’s 1976 film The Man Who Fell To Earth. The stamp-attached balloons reached 34,100m at a vertical speed of about 12mph. Having burst, the stamps have now started to descend to earth. Fans who correctly guess where “the stamps that fell to earth”wil win the entire collection.

The stamp features a photograph of the rock icon with his signature and trademark glasses. Fittingly, a peace symbol is shown between ‘USA’ and ‘Forever.’
There is no word yet on when and where the Lennon stamp will be issued on its first day of release, although it’s a good bet that a ceremony for it would take place in the Big Apple.
