Keith Moon Paiste Gong used heavily on stage and "Tommy" recording goes up for auction

By VMZ Staff on December 2, 2025

This Paiste gong, adorned with a distinct Chinese symbol, was owned by Keith Moon and first appeared on stage in 1968 with his Champagne Silver Kit.

It was actively used in numerous stage performances, including tours with multiple iconic drum kits such as the Black Premier Kit and the Premier Cream White Kit, until Moon''s passing in 1978. Additionally, it features a unique "WHO" stencil on the back and a notable dent on the top. The gong was also integral to various studio sessions, including the 1969 recording of the album “Tommy,” particularly the track “Underture.”

Provenance/Authenticity: Includes a Gotta Have Rock and Roll Certificate of Authenticity and a Letter of Provenance. The gong has also been professionally photo-matched by SIA to several significant concerts over the period it was actively used.

Cultural Significance: Keith Moon, as the drummer of The Who, was a central figure in the rock music scene, and his energetic drumming style set a new standard. The album “Tommy,” which features this gong, is a rock opera that played a crucial role in establishing The Who''s reputation and expanding the musical possibilities of rock music in the late 1960s.

Condition: Heavily used, consistent with extensive stage and studio use. The gong retains its original Chinese symbol and "WHO" stencil along with a dent on the top, confirming its authenticity and history of usage.

The Isolated Drum Track That Proves Keith Moon Was Ahead of His Time
One great example of that iconic possession is Keith Moon’s isolated drum track from the legendary hit “Who Are You”. This song can be heard on The Whos’ 1978 album of the same name.

The recording, which you can listen to below, was recorded at some point between September 1977 and April 1978. It’s an incredible track, but it’s also haunting given the context. Moon died just months later in September 1978. The record was released only three weeks before Moon passed away.

Recently Keith Moon's isolated drums on The Who 'The Real Me' was unearthed.
Taken from the band’s 1973 rock opera Quadrophenia, the track was written by Pete Townshend, and without Moon’s dextrous ability, there was no way that his expansive creative vision for the song or album would have been fully realised.
